Colorado Preference Point/Landowner Tag Hunts - Elk and Mule Deer - 11/23/14 04:10 PM

If you are building points in Colorado and are looking for a great hunt, this is it....

I have personally hunted with this outfitter and can honestly say that I don't think you will find a more honest hard working outfitter. All hunts are guided by the family and close friends. They have been operating in their area for many years and know every square inch!

Hunts are typically by vehicle transportation to the chosen hunting spot for the day and then on foot. The outfitter will tailor the hunt to the hunter's capability. Average age of the hunters on this hunt is 60-70 years old.

Success on this hunt over the years has been 95% with close to 100% shooting opportunity on bulls over 300". 2013's average was 324" out of 10 bulls taken. Expectations on this hunt should be around 320"....preference point hunt or landowner hunt, size expectations should be the same.

The unit you will be hunting is a trophy unit that requires drawing a tag or buying a landowner tag. Deadline for the preference point tags is April 1st. Points usually needed to draw this hunt.
Archery: 17 points to 18 points
Muzzleloader: 19 to 20 points
1st season rifle elk: 19 points to 20 points
2nd, 3rd season and 4th season rifle elk: 16 to 17 points
** Guaranteed hunts with landowner tags hunts are also available at an extra cost **

Hunt includes:
* 5 full hunting days (2x1) - Outfitter does try make it a 1x1 but it depends on the number of hunters in camp. Even if 2x1, it is usually only
for a portion of the hunt as some hunters tag out early.
* Cabin accommodations. There are 2 cabins on the property - the one cabin is an open layout that sleeps a max. of 6 (usually 4), while the other
cabin consists of 2 bedrooms that sleeps 4 - 2 in each.
* Home cooked meals
* Transportation during the hunt
* Game retrieval - horses are sometimes used for retrieval....nothing else

Not included:
* License
* Tips
* Meat processing if wanted
* Travel to/from the outfitters base

Cost of the hunt is $5,000.00 ($5,500 starting in 2016). For landowner tag hunts, please call.

This outfitter also offers the following:

Mule Deer - also a trophy unit
2013 hunt was 11 for 11 with a 175” average. 2015/16 still has a couple of openings as of now. The outfitter offers both preference point hunts along with landowner tags for this hunt as well. Hunt cost is $5,000.00 for the preference point hunt. For landowner tag hunts, please call...
Preference points usually required for this are:
Archery: 7 to 8 points
Muzzleloader: 14 Points
1st season rifle: N/A
2nd season rifle: 10 points
3rd season rifle: 10 to 11 points

Mt. Lion
In 2012 they were 7 out of 8 and last year was 5 for 5. Average lion harvested is 140 lbs.
If they fail to tree you a legal lion, you’re welcomed back at ˝ price.
Tags for this are on a quota system, but the outfitter has had no issue with the quota being filled.
Hunt dates are Dec., Jan. and Feb. Hunt cost is $5,000.00

Here are some pictures of the bulls that our group of 4 took with this outfitter.

NEWS: My brother and his friend just returned from hunting with this outfitter Nov. 12-16, 2014 and had a fantastic hunt. This hunt was a landowner tag hunt. Also in camp was a group of 4 that were hunting elk on a preference point hunt. Since I do not know the hunters I have blurred out their faces....this group was from Missouri

If anyone is interested on any of these hunts and would like more information, feel free to give me a call.

Brett those are awesome mulies!!! I hunted with Brett from hosted hunts last spring and took a great bear in Manitoba. Everything was as Brett said it would be and he was a fun guy to hunt with. I would jump on this but I already booked a Mulie hunt for next year in Wyoming. I got 12 deer points in Colorado so maybe 2016.

(Got the hide in the bear tanned for a rug but it was pretty badly rubbed. So I am going with a shoulder mount.)

Man those are some nice mulies, what zone do you hunt? I have some property in 85 west of trinidad, as I understand I have to draw even though I own property as I am not a full time resident.

Thanks for the comments Tom (ERNY)....it was a fun hunt and you were a great client....pretty good fisherman too!! I am going again in May on the same hunt and hosting a group of 6.....few spots still open. If you still want to do the mule deer hunt in 16 or 17, let me know....

On the mule deer hunt....for those who do/will have enough preference points....I talked with the outfitter on Monday and as of right now, all mule deer hunts are booked for 2015 and only 1 spot remaining for 2016.....he had 3 but I took 2....my brother and I are going (16')! Can't wait to go back again....

If anyone is interested, please call or e-mail me ASAP as this last spot will not last long.

The one remaining opening for mule deer in 2016 has been taken. Now booking for 2017.

A few spots are still open in 2015 for elk.

Brett,
You are talking about 320" average for bull Elk but looking at the pictures most of the Elk is not even 300" class.They are all nice animals but...

Re: Colorado Preference Point/Landowner Tag Hunts - Elk and Mule Deer - 01/15/15 03:00 AM

Otto,

If you read my initial post, here's what I said. "100% shooting opportunity on bulls over 300". 2013's average was 324" out of 10 bulls taken. Expectations on this hunt should be around 320".

I did not say that all of the pictures were from 2013 and were of bulls scoring at least 320. Some of the pics posted are from earlier hunts(our group from 2010) and from this last year (2014).

You have to remember....it's an average. Some guys will take the first decent bull they see....others will hold out.

Also,on the scoring...I am referring to gross score,not net. I should have clarified that.

Apparently you want to be secretive about where your hunts are taking place as you did not answer my question when i posted it then did not publicly post it when Dadsaid asked the same question. Im sure no one want to give away their honey hole but a general unit/regiin would be nice the more info. You post on here so hunters dont have to ask the more comfortable they will feel calling you or making a desicion.

I am looking at booking something for 2015 or 2016 but will cross you off my list.

Thanks

First, i want to apologize. I thought I had sent you a PM. Obviously I didn't. No excuses.

Second.....on my honey hole. For me to list every single aspect on the hunt (the unit, outfitter, etc.), would be defeating the purpose of the post.

If you, or anyone is interested in these hunts, please call me. Others here from the forum have...... My phone number is clearly listed. I would be happy to discuss all the details on this hunt.

Re: Colorado Preference Point/Landowner Tag Hunts - Elk and Mule Deer - 01/21/15 01:33 AM

Just got off of the phone with the outfitter tonight asking about some openings as we are having some open houses up in our area at the end of the month.

Two hunters that had spots booked for a 2016 mule deer hunt had something come up and cannot make it. These spots are now available. The outfitter thinks that with 10 pref. points a guy might have a chance at drawing, 11 is almost a sure bet. Landowner vouchers are also available for these spots but will be pretty pricey.

Also, 2017 is starting to fill up. 8 hunters just booked in the last few weeks.

Please call me if interested......these won't last long.
