Texas Coast Airboat Waterfowl Trips!!! - 06/12/13 06:58 PM

Were starting to fill our dates for this upcoming waterfowl season! Come and hunt with Team Ruffling Feather's on the Texas coast like you never have before. We run airboats in and out of the marsh. In our stretch of marsh we winter over 85% of redheads. We get thousands of pintails and wigeons here every year. Trips will be conducted in Port O' Connor or Seadrift, Tx. We have multiple packages from waterfowl hunting to cast and blast. Lodging is available. Message me for more details or call 936-671-3477. We have limited number of day's.

Waterfowl and Fishing Dreams.....

To all the fellow waterfowler's, Waterfowl season is upon us once again. As it gets closer to the season opener, my team and I our preparing for one of the best season's yet, with duck number's high, cooler weather, new gear and new Team member's. There's nothing much more exciting then firing up the motor in the pre dawn darkness( whether it be the airboat or the shoal cat) and racing towards the honey hole for the day. Setting out decoys and all the talk in the blind about what the day might bring us. Then right before LST you see ducks just dive bombing in. First you hear the whistling of the wings, then you hear the splashes and not long after that you hear the ducks talking amongst there selves. Then comes the moment we all have been waiting for Legal Shooting Time. As the morning progresses we encounter redheads and pintails in groups of hundreds or more, followed by teal and wigeons. Might even get a crack at some mottle ducks as well. We pick up our spread, hop in the boat and cruise through the marsh searching for redfish and speckled trout. Find a good group of redfish sitting in a bout a foot of water. We anchor upwind and everyone gets out with a rod and bait of there choice( which I love to watch a red explode on topwaters). We make our way towards the pack of hungry reds, watching as there exploding on pods of mullet. Get within range and we start firing our baits into the hungry group of reds. Bending rods are all I see down the group. Once shoulder's are sore and stringers are full we start making our way back towards the boat. After high fiving and congratulating each other we hunker down and make our way towards the dock. While cleaning the days harvest, the group cleans up, takes showers, while a hot lunch is being prepared. This is one of many scenarios that happens when you decide to take your Coastal waterfowl and fishing dreams and put them in the hands of Ruffling Feathers Guide Service. We will strive to be the premier destination for Saltwater fishing and Waterfowl in Texas. Message us for more details on how you can get into the action with us.

News Release

August 23, 2013

Texas Sets Waterfowl Seasons for 2013-14

Canvasback bag raised for first time since 1964; possession limits increased
...
AUSTIN – For the first time in a half century, Texas waterfowlers can take two canvasbacks daily under migratory game bird seasons approved for the 2013-14 by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission.

The increase comes with news of healthy waterfowl populations, with all species except pintail and scaup numbering above the long term goals identified in the North American Waterfowl Management Plan.

“Overall, waterfowl are doing quite well,” Kevin Kraai, Waterfowl Program Leader for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department told commissioners. “We’re near record levels and in some instances in the glory days for ducks.”

The commission also adopted a staggered split between the North and South Zones to allow for the opportunity of an additional week for those waterfowlers who travel between zones.

In another change to the season framework that should be welcomed by hunters, the possession limits for all migratory game birds is now three times the daily limit. For ducks, including teal during the early Sept. 14-29 season, the possession limit is 18.

The only decrease in bag limit configuration involves scaup, with a reduction to three daily. Following are the adopted season dates and limits:

High Plains Mallard Management Unit:

Youth: Oct. 19 - Oct. 20
Regular: Oct. 26 - Oct. 27 and Nov. 1 - Jan. 26
“Dusky” Duck: Nov. 4 - Jan. 26

South Zone:

Youth: Oct. 26 - Oct. 27
Regular: Nov. 2 - Dec. 1 and Dec. 14 - Jan. 26
“Dusky” Duck: Nov. 7 - Dec. 1 and Dec. 14 - Jan. 26

North Zone:

Youth: Oct. 26 - Oct. 27
Regular: Nov. 2 - Dec. 8 and Dec. 21 - Jan. 26
“Dusky” Duck: Nov. 7 - Dec. 8 and Dec. 21 - Jan. 26

Bag Limits

Ducks: 6/day
3 wood ducks
3 scaup
2 hen mallards
2 redheads
2 pintail
2 canvasback
1 “dusky duck” (mottled, black or Mexican-like) after the first 5 days
All others - 6
Mergansers: 5/day
2 hooded merganser
Coots: 15/day

Time for our early bird special. We will be offering a 2 man airboat trip for a cast and blast special during the big duck season. The trip includes either shooting ducks in the morning then switch focus and chase fish in the evening or vice versa. We provide all the decoys, dog, blinds, rod and reels. The trip cost will be $550 for 2 people for a all day event. Will put you on the books now and when dates come out I will be calling in Order( on who booked first) to confirm dates for the trips. If your looking for just a duck hunt I will be charging $400 for 2 people for the airboat trips this yr or 700$ for 2 days.

Just had a client send me some pics of his coastal mounts from this past season. Starting to get excited about this season. Already seeing some good numbers of ducks, cooler weather,8 new blinds and some new Captains on the roster this year should make itvery interesting for Ruffling Feather's Guide Service this year. Also going to be adding some layout blind hunting this year to put yall right on the action for when it gets tough.

Strong winds , bad rain and rough seas still wasn't enough our groups from fishing or hunting! Capt. Hunter Harwell pulled through and made limits happen this weekend with real, gadwalls, ring necks, tree ducks and some widgets!

Myself had success finding some solid redfish and black drum action!

Season already starting out great!

Seems like the coast is still missing the overall numbers but continues to get stronger everyday! Capt. Hunter Harwell had Jeff Mandeville's group today and they shot a bunch of redheads and some buffleheads. And yes they had two casualties of war with the ever elusive coots. Overall it was good day. Gearing up for the fishing trip tomorrow ! Still have some dates available , weekdays and jan2-3 weekend available. We have a lot of evening trips available. Still have dates available and our second half will be one to remember ! Pic from scouting session this morning

Re: Texas Coast Airboat Waterfowl Trips Still available - 12/16/15 01:59 AM

The coastal opener was definetly one to remember! It was a emotional roller coaster! But when fronts hit you from all different angles you roll with it! Our groups ended up shooting full redhead limits with bonus bluebills and buffleheads! Although the pics don't show full redhead limits they did! I take full responsibility for not getting a whole group shot!

Sunday

Sunday morning we woke up with another front with 35-40 mph winds and rain on the way! Decided to call the morning trip and it was a great idea! Waves stacked up 3-4 ft on the entrances of the back lakes and the open bay, well wouldn't have been a good idea! About noon the winds died down , waves got flat and back out to scout!

Monday

Sat on a back lake pond where we had found some puddle ducks the day before and ended up with a gadwall, mottle duck and 8 redheads for our morning group! That evening Guide Brandon Currie, my 5yo Kaleb , my wife and I had a decent evening shoot. 5 redheads and 4 bufflehead heads! The high light of my Monday and season so far was my 5 yo dropping the hammer on his first duck!

A bull wigeon came in sat and put his feet down in the spread and my 5 yo shot and he folded! But with all the high fiving we didn't see he was still very much alive! Well he hopped up and left in a hurry! Not 5 minutes later and after calling my 5yo down a lone redhead drake came in! He was dropping in and my son dropped the hammer and killed his first duck! It was definitely a proud dad moment! We made sure he was feet up the time before the celebration started! And last but not least the last duck to hit the spread was a bufflehead head hen. He beaded down and water swatted her . She still had a little movement in her but crippled for sure. We finished her off and called it a evening!

Our puddle ducks are showing up slowly but surely! But our redheads are in the thousands right now!

Still have some dates open in December and January

Capt Hunter Harwell and Guide Brandon Currie put in overtime today while hosting a cast and blast for some good ol boys from east Texas! Mr. Rogers first trip to the coast was a trip to remember! Not only did he enjoy some fast duck shooting but catching his first saltwater fish as well! Capt Hunter reported early they had fast redhead action and enjoyed a group of about 2000 ducks decoy into there spread and sit for a little bit! That's what happens when you put the time and hard work in scouting and finding the "X". After the hunt they switched focus and went chasing after the other kind of reds! First fish to double a pole over was a 34" bull red. Followed up by a meat haul of sheepshead and black drum! Stayed tuned as tomorrow we host Meranda Ivey's group on a morning duck hunt!

Once again redheads took the spotlight. We have been crazy busy with scouting, hunting and fishing! Capt Hunter Harwell and guide Brandon Currie has been putting in overtime this weekend, chasing after flocks of ducks! With winds constantly switching, we have been on the grind making sure our clients have a good shoots. We take pride in trying to stay on the "X" everyday!

We still have some dates open message for details !
My 5 year old loves his new gun and after shooting 2 boxes of shells he has finally shot his first limit of redheads and a green wing teal!

Heath Massey's group had good diver action and his buddy Ryan shot his first duck! A bull drake redhead that's going on the wall!

Miles sim group had a good evening shoot with redheads!

I also had a good Tim harvesting a banded redhead drake ! Been fun this last 3-4 days

Capt Hunter Harwell and Guide Brandon Currie put groups on some solid fish and ducks today! Mild south winds made the weather hot but that didn't stop the ducks from flying or fish from biting! Both groups had solid fishing and decent duck shoots!

Re: Texas Coast Airboat Waterfowl Trips Still available - 12/30/15 02:29 AM

WE still have jan 3 open for a group. Special pricing message for details

Well as im writing this, pintails, widgeons, shovelers and of course some redheads are getting settled in around our area. We have seen a huge push in birds since the front initially hit. Well after Christmas I had the opportunity to finally take my Stepdad on a cast and blast this weekend. This was the first time in 24 years he has been duck hunting and a blast he had. Started off by hitting the redheads Saturday morning, the groups couldn't have worked any better then they did.

Followed by a but whipping ill never forget. Now its not common for my wife to outfish me, very uncommon to outfish the whole boat. She down right put it on us. But all in all we were happy, 3 man limits of black drum and 3 solid redfish that well, has been devoured since then.

Also on Saturday we had Chad Hill and Austin Hill for a father son duck trip. Guide Brandon Currie reported early that they had teal buzzing the spread like crazy with minimal success. With them landing within 7 yards and flying right over your face right at LST its always a challenge. How ever when it got a little lighter it was on.

Saturday night we relaxed over a bacon wrapped axis backstrap grilled with some bacon wrapped jalepenos and duck breast. Hoping the winds would lay down before we hit it sunday. We awoke to higher winds and a empty boat ramp. After our safety meeting we loaded the boats and hit a small bay that's not too far from the boat ramp. Stopped at my first blind and someone had put decoys out the night before, so I did the respectful thing and kept going. You always have to have a back up plan. We showed up to our second spot and the work was on, We made a blind on a mangrove blind on a sandy bottom right off a point. Well the lighter it got the higher the winds got. And turns out the redheads and bluebills wanted to be in our little cove and out of the wind. Tony and Chase were on point with some fine wingshooting. We got our redheads with some bluebills ( that were on the boat before the pic idk why) and we were back at the ramp before 9:30 am to beat the upcoming rain.

Capt. Hunter Harwell said he was struggling as he had a couple of groups of people on both sides on him after they had already set everything up. They gave it a shot and had a slow time. With us being done early and still had some time before the rain hit I opted to go grab Hunters Group and put them in the blind I was in to get them some shooting in. After we got the groups situated I brought my group in and we got cleaned up, with in 30 minutes I had a phone call saying they were done with there redheads, crippled some buffleheads and was ready to come in. All before the rain hit.

Re: Texas Coast Airboat Waterfowl Trips Still available - 01/05/16 08:58 PM

We have been extremely busy over the holidays, whether it was hunting or doing family stuff! With this recent front we have seen a influx of birds but still lacking the puddle duck action! We're still grinding taking full redhead limits with some scaup and other ducks in the mix!

Re: Texas Coast Airboat Waterfowl Trips Still available - 01/11/16 03:00 AM

So this past week was the unofficial Texas hunting forum hunt! Guide Brandon Currie put his group on solid divers all 3 days with some bonus birds that included pintail and bluebills! The icing on the cake came when a single redhead drake came in and we had a client shoot one time and bam, ended up with a band!

Was told they had a great time at Wayne's house for the get together Saturday night as wel!

Re: Texas Coast Airboat Waterfowl Trips Still available - 01/19/16 09:23 PM

This past weekend was a extremely busy one for us! With this new front that pushed through we have been seeing a lot more puddlers then we have all season! We have shot full redhead limits on top of some fine pintails! Add some widgeons, gadwalls and some bluebills and we have been having some quality hunts!

My wife with a beautiful pair of redhead drakes!

Capt. Hunter Harwell had a unexpected visitor run through his spread yesterday!

This morning was nothing short of how a coastal hunt should go! On top of it being Capt! Hunter Harwell's birthday we shot trophy bull sprigs, big white top widgeons and some huge redhead drakes!

Re: Texas Coast Airboat Waterfowl Trips Still available - 01/30/16 06:42 PM

Well the closer was a bitter sweet ending for us! We have been non stop since the second opener and we were wore out! Saturday and Sunday were reminders that Mother Nature is and continues to be in charge as we lost nearly 2 ft of water over night! Literally switching game plans on the fly!

Earlier that week we had the pleasure of hosting Outiftter Billy Whitley and his crew from Rolling Bone Outfitters!

Wednesday we started with a crane hunt!

Thursday we started with shooting straps of ducks, with some trophy pintails and redheads!

And ended with some solid boxes of fish

Saturday we had the cross group and after settling for game plan c we had a decent shoot for red heads with some groups!

Sunday morning once again proved to be a brutal awakening with Mother Nature still not returning any of her water to our bay system! Ended up rescheduling our groups for next year!

Would like to thank everyone that chose us for there coastal waterfowl adventure and looking forward to next year already! Thanks for your business!

Our fishing season is about to bust wide open!

Winding down after a hard fought weekend with the fish. Although Saturday and Sunday were brutal with the northern that blew in, today however was a lot better. Had limits of redfish along with a few trout and black drum today.

Saturday was extremely tough as our plan was to run and gun. The redfish that we had previously been catching was non existent when the front was blowing in. How ever we managed a small box of reds and trout for the days catch.

Sunday was a little better. The redfish were starting to show back up after being blown out.

Today was great. The winds calmed down and the fish were hungry.

Our redfishing is heating up and ducks are starting to show. Seen my first group of pintails along with several wars of blues wings on the bay.

We are still booking for our upcoming waterfowl season!

Re: Texas Coast Airboat Waterfowl Trips Still available - 12/12/16 08:59 PM

With the hard front we had push through Friday, chilly temps had the ducks changing there plans overnight. The boat ride at 5 am was very chilly. After arriving at the blind and set up our spread, the wind changed dramatically as it picked up and switched directions. We settled in for the coastal opener hoping for the best. Even with drastic changes Mother Nature threw at us we managed a limit of redheads and 8 buffleheads.

My evening party ended up with there 6 redheads and a wigeon hen and two bufflehead heads.

Sunday morning we woke up to little wind and very warm weather. However with the wind changing we were very optimistic that we could get into a spot where the puddle ducks had been before the wind switched on us. And they did.

We shot our 8 redheads 3 pintails 4 wigeons and one bluebil. Should've had a lot more pintails and wigeons for sure.

I still have a lot of evenings and some week/weekends available.

Re: Texas Coast Airboat Waterfowl Trips Still available - 01/10/17 04:32 PM

Had a couple of guys from Arkansas and Austin this past several days. With the winds in the 30+mph range made things challenging but it was all worth it.

The guys from Arkansas have never shot redheads and wanted several to mount so that was on our agenda.

We had two banded redheads this weekend with one band that was almost worn through and had no numbers at all on it

Our puddle ducks have shown up in full force. We have been killing pintails , teal, wigeons , shovelers and gadwalls

We still have several week dates and some weekend morning and evening hunts available
