Feeder Lids???

I've got a couple of old 55 gallon barrel feeders that the lids have pin holes rusted thru allowing rain water to ruin the corn inside.

Where would be a good place to find replacement lids for the snap ring retainer or even aftermarket lids that merely sit on top with a lip that slides down over the side of the barrel a little bit??? That isn't outrageously expensive

All Seasons Feeder dealers sell that type of lid. Feed stores sell that type and many other after market lids from plastic to metal.

ILove those sit on top lids like you posted a pic of. They are simple and sturdy. They keep water out and our heavy enough coons can’t get it off.

Those galvanized lids are the only way to go! I have them on all my feeders. Just make sure you get the one piece ones because some are spot welded together.

Also they CAN blow off during a high wind event even with the deep lip like the one in the pic. I put a large rock on top of mine and have never had an issue since doing that. You absolutely have to remember that its up there though before jacking with your feeder, otherwise you run the risk of taking a rock to the head if it comes down with you under it.

I use these. They will usually last about 5 years before they crack and they will give you plenty of warning before they do. I’ve even had a feeder fall over and the lid not break.

he's right.....bought my lids from West Texas Game Feeders in San Angelo...don't use a rock though...go to HD or Lowes and get a couple eye hooks and a long spring and figure out your connection....piece o cake!

He speaks great truth! I was helping w my brother's feeder and didn't know about the rock on his. Dropped right on my skull and darn near cracked it. Knocked me to my knees and had a nice deep scalp cut.Ouch!

I don't climb ladders much anymore so I purchased the one that TexasLefty shows. I built a handle system that lifts and swivels the lid while I stand safely on the ground.

I then use a filler to fill the feeder. And stay safe and stable on the ground.

I picked up some heavy plastic lids made for ring clamps, no bung holes. A guy around Greenville was giving them away. Haven't seen his ad in a long time.

Home Depot had some listed for cheap for a while

I just bought the lids that have at Academy. 4-28-18, and they had them on sale for $19. Two of them was missing one of the screws that come with the lids, so they took 15% off. They seem to fit very well, I just took off the band that was holding the old lid in place and slipped this lid over the top with the old lid still on. One screw seems like it will hold it on. It is a little thicker than I thought it would be. I did put a brick on the top just in case, but I'm going to remove them as my wife helps me with the feeders and I dont want to take the chance of it coming down on her.

I've had these metal lids on two barrel feeders for 5+ years and have never had one blow off. Outside of a tornado and very intense straight line winds, seems pretty unlikely as the probably weigh 20-25 lbs I would guess

You could repair the lids you have. Clean real good and bondo the bad areas and then spray galvanized paint over. Or use that rubber spray.

don't get the plastic ones!!! between my brother and I every feeder had the metal lid except one of my brothers that he had put the plastic lid on. That feeder was the only one that would clog up the funnel due to condensation building up on the inside of the lid and drip into the corn collecting all the dust and eventually clogging the funnel.

You can use plastic lids if you put 4 self-tapping screws spaced on the top lip of the feeder barrel. They let the lid sit on top of the screws and not a tight seal. It creates just space to allow the feeder to vent or breath. Even a tight fitting metal lid can cause the sweating issue with corn. I prefer a feeder lid to not fit tight and have a gap.

Same experience for me. shook the feeder to see if plugged and 20 lb rock to the head. Good thing i am hard headed. Drank some pain killer and moved on.

turn the lid that came with the barrel upside down and it fits tight..just hit it once or twice with the palm of your hand and viola you have a tight fit..put a rock on top for a windproof,watertight lid..problem solved!

The springs keep them on tight and no need for a brick or rock on top.

Tyvek and a bungie strap

I did it once for a quick fix haha. It’s water tight.

Think I have about $12-15 in mine. Got a water heater basin, couple small springs from the hardware store, had screws. The basin is a tad bigger diameter than the drum, but not by much, been out now for about 10 years and had to re set one spring once. Would have been easier and cheaper I guess just tossing a brick or whatnot on top.

I just ordered 3 of these. Anxious to see how they are...
