Feeder lid question

Feeder lid question - 08/16/17 12:15 AM

Does the lid on your feeder have to be completely water and air right so your corn doesn't spoil? I've heard yes and no on this topic and would like some clarification because my lid doesn't fit 100% perfectly

It needs to be rain water tight, but actually good if it fits a bit loose and can vent to allow moisture to escape. Sacked corn still has quite a bit of moisture in it.

This is what happens when Corn gets wet. It IS NOT FUN!

It needs to be loose enough to get a little ventilation, but still be able to keep rain out.
Just make sure it won't blow off...I use bungy cords to hold my metal lid down, one on each side and never had a problem.
I once had a lid blow off in a storm and lost about 250# of corn and it was a mess....Lesson learned.

I have 55 gallon metal barrels which have plastic black lids which I "throw" on top of the barrels and place a 15lb rock on top. I fill the feeders up and it stays fresh and dry for 5 - 6 months. I believe that you do not want to keep it "air tight."

I have built and sold feeders for quite awhile. The best there is is as said one that fits loose, and hangs down over about 3", made of galvanized steel. BPS and Bass Pro handle them for about $35.00. That may seem high but will last forever. Plastic is OK, I have used them till a squirrel or what ever chewed through. I pulled up a cabela's page but in your area I'm sure others sell them, they are the best.

I use oversize metal lids and hold them in place with heavy rocks. Took a lid blowing off in the wind to get smart. Wet corn is a PITA to clean up in a feeder.
