deer protein feeders - 01/18/17 03:35 AM

Just a quick question to those who use protein feeders and have cattle on their lease. Do any of you have trouble with cattle eating the feed out of your protein feeders?
The place I leased for 2016 season has very wild cattle on it that would eat every bit of corn on the ground every time my feeder went off, they also started banging on the legs with their heads and hips knocking corn out of the feeder. It was so bad I had to panel off the feeder to keep them out. I am considering going to protein feeders mostly to benefit the Deer, but I am wondering if I need to panel this off as well.
Any advice is appreciated.

Panel it. They've already shown they know what a feeder is. That protein will only be helping the rancher out, not your deer. Make the pen large enough that they can't get anywhere close to it. Put t-posts at the ends and in the middle of each panel.

Here is a good video on that subject by TAMU. Should take care of your problem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aAq7OxKnPk

Feeder pens are a hunters best friend if there is livestock or feral pigs on the property.

Consider yourself lucky if they haven't knocked them over bent & broke them up, yet.

With feeder pens, the bigger the better, 10 - 14 arranged in a circle, t posts every 8'.

VERY LUCKY SO FAR,
feeder pens make sure if you have a spin feeder in your pen that your pen is large enough that no corn goes outside the pen.

I put a pen around my spin feeder with cattle panels due to the cows and hogs but the deer didn't like going in it. I got lots of pictures of deer outside it but only a few of them in the pen. I cut the panels down to 38" and that helped a little, I was hoping to not need the pen with a protein feeder but was pretty sure that was a pipe dream.
Thanks for the input.

Wow, Thanks for the input. I had full height cattle panels around my spin feeder at first but rarely got pictures of deer in the feeder pen. I cut the top 2 rows out of the panels and that helped a little. I will follow this video advice when I put up the protein feeder. I used 11 panels around my spin feeder to make sure the corn stayed in the pen. I think I will stick to that size pen.

Thanks BBEAR, I put the pen around the spin feeder but used cattle panels. The deer did not like going the high panel pen, after I cut them down 2 rows I got a little more pictures of deer in the pen. I will cut them down to 34" to see if that helps. I am doing away with the spin feeder and going to strictly protein for next year.
