Most will say bigger is better, 8-12 panels in a circle should do you right.

I have 2 pens that are 725 yards apart. One is 15 panels and the other is 23 panels. Way more bucks use the 23 panel feed pen. We are going to expand the smaller pen very soon.

iv done it with as little as 4 but I try to use 8 if my pocket can handle it... if your just keeping cows out some good concha wire will do the trick... bout three strands and 10 tpost and an hour if that

I used 34" tall hog panels and my pen is 48' square. 12 panels.

10+ you can't build it too big but you definitely can too small. Round or oval is best. Mature bucks don't jump in small pens. I would recommend 36" hog panels with a strand of barb wire on top if you have cows that want in.

I used 7 1/2 because that is what I had left from my last lease after a cow destroyed 1/2 of a panel. When I built the 7 1/2 panel at my current lease I used the 1/2 panel as a gate. With the gate I can back my Rhino right under the feeder tripod to fill my feeder.

We have found that 15 panels lets plenty of deer feel comfortable in the pen....

We used cattle panels cut down. 8 panels to make a round pen seems to be working.

If I do it again I will use hog panels. Several hogs have been able to get into our feed pens through the cattle panels.

So most of you recommend 36in high panels? have you had any problems with hogs getting over them?

I use 28" and to date have not had hogs or cows go over. Of course my cows are lazy and fat. The piglets will go through if you use the panels with large squares.

I was thinking about getting 12 panels for my pen. I will have a protein feeder as well as 55 gal corn feeder. I think that should be enough.

What do you think?

12 panels will work fine. Mine is currently 8 panels with a 55 gal protein feeder and 600# stand and fill. I've counted as many as 11 deer in there at one time. I am however planning to expand by at least a couple of panels this spring just to give them more room to move around.

Why round vs square?

I've read that they don't like corners? No clue if true

I'm curious on the round vs square also?

What about height? Cattle panels come in 50" height, is that too tall and I need to cut down?

Re: How big are your feeder pens? - 12/29/16 02:33 PM

Both of mine are made of four 20' panels cut in half with a row of barbed wire around the top. So 40x40 over all, I've never had a problem with bucks not wanting to get in them.

In researching it keeps a deer from getting cornered in a fight.

Harder for a pig to get in and out of a round pen imo.

Round are stronger if you have hogs!

Used 12 panels, and it is somewhat circleish. More of an oval. Paid some local guys to build the other one.

We build feeder pens for customers all the time and use 8 -15ft panels cut down to 48" , 2 per side and put the small squares on the bottom! Works perfect no pigs or cows get in and deer jump in easy. Fawns eats whats on outside of pen until old enough to jump in.
