Size for Box Blind?

Size for Box Blind? - 07/13/15 03:09 PM

If you were going to build a new box blind, what size would you build, and are there any key features you would add? I'm thinking 4'x6', 5'x6', 4'x8', 5'x8'? Blind will be on the ground or on a short base, and weight is not a big factor for where I have in mind for the blind. Two-man hunts are a distinct possibility. Thoughts?

Mine is 4x4 and just right for me and a little buddy heater. For two men 4x8 minimum. Insulate it or be cold.

To me 4x5 is the perfect blind, not to big and not to small but ok for two people.

As a guy with two kiddos my next one will be 5x8. I need one big enough where the whole family of 4 can hunt together.

At minimum I would go 4x6 for two people.

You need to get one of these for the entire family.

Had a 4x6 built for me and the wife, It's fine, but next time I will go with 5x6 for a little extra leg room.

4X6 with a built in bench seat. Used to use old office chairs, but they took up too much space.

up I'm thinking if I went 5x6 or even 5x8 I could put in a nice shelf for a gun rest. At 5x8 it would be long enough to nap in, if I felt so inclined. I better double-check the width on my 5x10 trailer, make sure it will fit inside the rails.

That's what mine is, 4' 10" x 8', so I could fit it between the rails of the trailer for the trip out there and more importantly the trip to it's set up spot. That little bit of extra leg room makes all the difference. I went from a 4x6 to the new one, and it's super nice.

I'm on a new lease this year, thinking about a 5x5 for myself. Insulated well, it shouldn't be an issue to keep warm.

My first blind is a 6x6, was a bow hunters. Good friend lost his lease and gave me his blind. Its a 4x8 and I wouldn't have any other size now. 2cents

Re: Size for Box Blind? - 07/14/15 04:27 AM

6x6 I bow hunt and hunt with buddies all depends on what you want to do. I have a office chair and a reg no arm chair in all 3 of mine. If you want two office chairs you need a x7 or 8 if you have shelves. ideal size for me would be 5x7 but to many cuts so I went 6x6 to fit studs better.

I built an 8'x8', had little waste and you wouldn't believe the extra room, would be nothing for overnighting for 2-3 people., Build in a couple drop down twin beds that close up against the wall and you have a hell of a "tree house".

I think one of the biggest things to consider, is how much time will you spend in the blind, if you hunt long and hard, more room is always welcome.

5×4 is great for 1 and huntable for 2 people. Got 3 of them.

Re: Size for Box Blind? - 11/03/15 09:12 PM

Go 6x8 or 6x9 if you can. That extra foot of width makes a huge difference for 3 people and 3 comfortable chairs. Can have a shelf on 3 sides also to store gear, etc also.

Re: Size for Box Blind? - 11/04/15 05:50 PM

Try this, take a sheet of plywood and lay on the ground, set two chairs on it, two people in chairs twist around like you hunting. Should give you a idea of how big to build.
If build to small hard to add onto. If a little big more room.

Re: Size for Box Blind? - 11/04/15 09:02 PM

x2 on the 6x9. I saw one in Brady a while back and it's roomy. My daughter who in on the lease with me immediate said she could put a cot in the blind and still have plenty of room.

Re: Size for Box Blind? - 11/05/15 03:25 AM

Nothing wrong with having a blind you can stretch out and nap in, especially if you like to make an all dayer out of it. Also nice to get in extra early and catcha few winks while the woods calm back down. I get made fun of for doing it all the time, but it helps me stay out longer. Although I will say I'd prefer the smallest possible to do this in, cuz it's annoying as hell to have to move around a big blind to see out the windows, not to mention noisy.

One feature that hasn't been mentioned is height. If I can stand up instead of being hunched over or crawling getting in and out makes a huge difference to me.

Re: Size for Box Blind? - 11/10/15 02:09 PM

I have a 4x6 right now and feel it's too small for just me. I like to kick my feet up and relax, and that hard being over 6 foot tall. Next blind will be a 5x8 since the wife likes coming with me.

Re: Size for Box Blind? - 11/11/15 12:57 AM

I have 2 - 4x8's and they can hold me and my two kids without any issues. Usually one of them is laying down on the floor sleeping and that can get a little cramped when both want to lay down. If you are looking for something you can lay down in, a 5x8 or 6x8 would be better. Since you are building your own, once you go past 4x8, you have to get another piece of plywood for the floor and the sides. So at that point, it doesn't really matter whether you go 5x8, 6x8 or 8x8.

I built four this summer that are 6x8 with 7'3" ceilings and full size 3'0 metal exterior doors. Everyone loves them.

Re: Size for Box Blind? - 11/18/15 02:01 AM

5x6 is perfect for 2 people, 4ft blinds are too narrow, 5x6 is perfect, if you really want some room try 5x8 or 6x8

Either 5x8 or 6x8 is what I would do

And dang, I need to start painting blinds if it's $40 a foot

All my blinds are 4x6 mounted on skids. 2 Executive chairs fit in.

Last one I built was 4x8' and was well worth the extra size. You might as well be comfortable when hunting!

I built one 5x8 for a guy I know. He wanted it big enough to stand a twin sized mattress up on its end so if he wanted to take a nap he could just fold up his chair and lay the mattress down. I even cut him some small windows he could open down at eye level when he was laying down. I think he slept in the stand quite a bit at night and woke up occasionally to shoot hogs at the feeder. Also added a 12volt battery that mounted under the stand with a solar charger to keep it charged. Then put a dc to ac converter to plug in a cell phone and keep his spot light charged. Turned out to be pretty neat.

5x8x6.5

4 ft wide just doesn't allow me enough room to maneuver in the stand and if there's a good chance that you'll have more than one person hunt then 8 ft will allow both elbow room and 6.5 ft high allows both to stand and stretch the legs. Also at eight ft wide it'd be enough for Paw Paw and Maw Maw to take grandson or granddaughter along with plenty of room!

Re: Size for Box Blind? - 11/28/15 02:27 PM

Go as big as you can transport/have space for. When I was a kid, we built an 8'x6'x8'

Not going to cost you that much more to build it, and the space was amazing. We had room to put 2 full size office chairs with a small end table in between. Me and dad used to play cards on it. Shelves, storage. Never have to compromise on anything you want in the stand because you don't have space.

I built mine is 6x8. I prefabricated the walls and floor at the house and assembled at the lease. Next one I build will be 8x8. I'm a big dude and with my guns, backpack, heater and another hunter it's a tight fit in my current blind.
