Pelican Rifle Cases - Cutout vs. Pluck & Pull

Looking at getting one for a custom rifle I'm having built - which one do you guys like better or have had better experiences with?

I would imagine pluck and pull is easier but cutout more form fitting....

Use an electric knife for the cut out

I like a custom cut out case better. But I think the only real difference is appearance. I'm sure the pluck and pull will protect your rifle as well as the other. Pelican's are tough as heck.

personal preference. whichever you like better, go with it. There will be no difference in protection value. as mentioned above, pelican cases are top notch protection wise.

I've abused the $200 Pelican double rifle case for several years. Dust, rain, ice, snow, I'd let someone throw it off the roof with one of my custom rifles inside. $3500 worth of rifle, and scope inside, $200 is cheap insurance.

The pluck foam will come out in places you don't want it to. I've got friends that have it and it looks like it would drove me nuts. No way would I trust it like a Pelican with cut yourself foam. I just used razor blades, but I bet the electric fish knife would work.

you can also buy cheap spare foam online and cut it out too. I bought an extra set of foam and cut it out to fit a different shotgun in one of my cases.

I used an electric filet knife and it was easy, but make sure they blade stays square while cutting. Mine had a tendency to bend to the inside of the cut making it a very tight fit. It's also hard to go back and make small corrections. I think either the pluck or cut foam will do the same job

I have a rifle that came with a pelican that was cut out. It is awesome, I know they are expensive but a little peace of mind is worth it to me. My brother in law used an electric filet knife on his and it worked great. Just don't rush it. Good luck.

I used duct tape to mark off the areas that are thicker than others and plucked/cut 1/2 the foam depth and don't have any issues with closing. For the price....love it! Now I can take my AR and my 30-06 everywhere in one case.

I have called Plano and talked to a rep that was able to help and applied a discount to boot.

I've got the Pelican and also used the filet knife to cut the foam. Man, its built like a tank and water/dust/dirt proof. I love it.

2nd the motion that pull-n-pluck sucks, particularly if you have tear-outs with small/narrow areas in between them. I'm buying a whole solid piece to cut for one of mine in the near future.

A friend of mine feels the same after his experience with it. I am going the cutout route in my Boyt H51 (http://boytharness.com/product/h51-double-long-gun-case-2/). Actually just sat down here taking a break from working on layout. I like the game Tetris but this is a little frustrating.

Electric knife and cut on the small side. I find it's better to have a tight fit for my rifles and scopes.

I have a few Pelican cases. Custom cut is the way to go. Place the rifle and anything else you want in there on the pad in reverse order. Do "body outlines" in chalk. Start the cut with a standard filet knife and do all the rest with electric. Cut inside the chalk marks then flip the pad over so they don't show. Finish with a light spray coat of "Flex Seal" to give the center pad extra rigidity. That's just the way I do it.

Edited to add: you can also glue the bottom pad to the case and the center pad to the bottom pad with that spray on laminate countertop adhesive if it's gonna' be dedicated to one rifle.
