Best hunting boots - 09/15/15 03:41 PM

I am stumped and looking for real world intel on a good pair of hunting boots. I have worn out my old faithful boots. My ankles are pretty well destroyed and I need to give up slip on boots for something with laces. I need something that will be comfortable, cool in the heat and warm in cold weather - with good and obvious ankle support. Anybody got a brand or name to research?

Pretty sure you're not going to find that Holy Grail. On many days, I wear insulated boots on morning hunts and snake boots on the afternoon hunts when it warms up. But here come the Danner Pronghorn fan boys in 3, 2, 1...

Pronghorns were on the radar, but I also like the boots with the BOA cable laces.

Dinners that are made in USA. Higher but worth it. Also have a pair of Meindl Perfekt hunters, dang good boot

Take this with a grain of salt, as I'm sure those BOA cable lace type boots have come a long ways but I'm still scared of them. Back in the day when my buddies and I were big in to wakeboarding, there were a couple of companies that came out with the BOA lace style bindings. 2 friends of mine got a set and both of them were done with after a year. One, the cable broke and on the other, the ratcheting knob stripped out. That's been probably close to ~10 years ago, but still left me with a bad taste about them.

Zamberlans, nothing better in my opinion. I have an insulated pair of the Cabelas Meindels which are nice but no way near anything close to the Zamberlans. A lot of folks say Kennetrek but I have never tried a pair on. Some also say Lowa.

Boots I have tried that I don't like or don't fit "me" well are, Vasque, Danner, Asolo, & La Sportiva. These are are quality boot makers, no knock on them their. They just don't fit me well.

Did a little research and tried on what I could find. Purchased the cabelas meindl Denali with IQ. Just hiking in them for the last month preparing for Colorado mule deer and so far very comfortable and seem well made. I have never owned high dollar boots before but I am glad I spent the money on these at this point.

I went to my Red Wing store a while back, ended up with a pair of Irish Setter Vaprtrek boots with orthotic-type insoles. Very comfortable. Between the work boots and the hunting boots I bet I tried on about 15 pair.

Danner USMC RAT boots

These are what I wear. They are fantastic. They are waterproof, comfortable, made in USA, and tough as nails. If they're good enough for the marines, they're good enough for me. I love mine. I got them a lot cheaper on Ebay, new in the box.

I like my danners smile

I don't think they are the end all boots. But they are one of the few makers that have wide cuts. If you have wide feet it makes a huge differences

I just bought a new pair of Danners. Comfortable and waterproof.

First no boot fits the same for everyone.

Second what you do in those boots means a lot.

If you put 100 rough miles a year on a boot, I'd look at a stiffer sole from zamberlians, lowa, kennetrek, and hanwag.

X2 on the Danners for wide feet. I have very wide feet and tried for years to find boots that didn't hurt. If I found them wide enough, they were too long. Now on my second pair of Danners and can walk all day pheasant hunting or quail hunting and they feel great.

I have been pretty happy with Danner. I have a pair of 400 gram insulated pronghorns and a pair of their snake boots. they have great ankle support and traction and have lasted several seasons so far.

I have both the Danner Pronghorns and Cabela's Perfekt by Meindl and the Meindl's feel significantly better for my feet. I've also noted a shift in reviews of the Pronghorns over the years, not sure but I recall a change in the design or construction with the newer being rated lower. Just my thoughts.

For what off the shelf boots cost today you should look at getting a pair made to fit.
Russel Moccasin Boots. I have been having my hunting boots made to fit now for a long time. They are not that much more than a decent pair of off the shelves and always fit perfect.

Cabelas Perfekt

As I understand some are now made in China and people think they are inferior (not sure if they are or not). On Their website it will say made In America

Re: Best hunting boots - 10/02/15 03:12 AM

Danner still has some American made in Portland buts but it ain't the pronghorns.

It there all leather boots like the elk Hunter etc.

It really comes down to how you use them with any boots.
