COAL vs mag length

COAL vs mag length - 05/25/18 03:10 PM

On my .243 tikka my max COAL is 2.894 but my magazine 2.832. So I can only seat my bullets as far out as my mag will allow. My question is how much shorter than my mag should I seat my bullets to ensure that they load properly when chambering the next round?

On the same mag I seated at 2.812 with no issues. It may go longer just fine but that was ideal for me.

Edit: you have to have some space because all bullets are not created equal. Even from the same box. We want them to be but it just doesn’t happen. I would think .005 minimum.

Try .005" short and see how it acts.

But sometimes do to bullet inconsistencies, some may end up too close to the mag.

I had similar issue with my grendel in an ar and basically tried this to make it as long as possible will still cycling fine. The roughly .005" clearance was enough with the 123 eld.
