Best ammo for 30-06?

Best ammo for 30-06? - 03/16/18 01:40 PM

I have a Remington model 700. Any recommendations on ammo? Cabela's employee recommended remington core lokt. Not really looking for the $70 a box ammo. Just a solid and affordable performer. Going to use it for deer hunting next fall. Thanks.

Every rifle will be different. You rifle may shoot well with the Remington core lokts, but a different rifle, even one from the same manufacturer, may not like it at all but shoots federal very well. You never know until you try. Go buy one box of each type of ammo that you plan to try, and shoot them all through your rifle. Once you've found one that shoots well, go buy a bunch of boxes of that ammo.

I would try Federal Fusion. It tends to shoot well in most rifles and has good terminal performance.

The Federal blue box works well in mine. Their premium line works better in other rifles I havehad.

Federal fusion has always impressed me. The truth is though any cheap ammo that’ll hold 2” at a 100 yards is bad medicine on deer in a 30-06. That’s with the big assumption that you’re not talking about long range which I assume you’re not. The core-lok and federal blue box seem to perform very well if you can keep em on target.

I will agree with the posters above. Go get 150 and 165 grain Core Lockts and Federal blue box and see which one shoots best in your rifle. Then go buy 10 boxes of that same ammo and have a good time hunting. Several years ago I guided a young man who had just done this. His turned out to be Federal blue box.

Don’t see where else you’ll get the same quality for the price

All of my 3 30-06's shoot the Home-Made brand best.

What UncleBubba says! Rifles are at least as unique as their owners, and the only way for you to get to know what your 700 likes is to try a bunch of different kinds in the bullet weight you prefer.

Federal premium 30-06 165gr ballistic tips have been the most accurate factory load I’ve tried in my Remington 700.

I agree with unclebubba's advice.

they are like $23 a box at Bass Pro.

I would give these a try. I also had good luck in their ballistic tip in my 700 Mountain Rife.

Rather than buy a bunch of different kinds before settling on your favorite, you could try them 1 or 2 at a time. If you find something you like, you don't have a bunch of others sitting around. Buying many kinds will tell you what is best in that rifle but if the first box shoots a 3 inch group at 200 yards, your done, right? It's not like deer season is just around the corner.
