7mm-08 A.I. continues to impress.

7mm-08 A.I. continues to impress. - 03/07/18 05:59 PM

My little 17" walking around rifle has a good load with 162 gr. ELD-X, at a muzzle velocity of 2640 fps on formed brass. Just because I wanted to know, I decided to work up a load with 150 gr ELD-X. I wanted to know how fast they would go out of such a short barrel, and I wanted to see if the incredible (for weight and length) BC was legit. Sunday I ladder tested them, searching for pressure. Keep in mind, standard 7mm-08 data is at your fingertips, but Ackley Improved data is not necessarily. I had to keep stepping up until I saw pressure signs on the brass. Well, I saw a node beginning, but kept going, and finally got hard bolt lift, and a shiny ring around the primer pocket, it got out of the node, so no worries, but I did find pressure.

Tuesday was time to group shoot the three charges that were in the node, and right before pressure. There was one clear winner with a vertical dispersion of 13/16" at 300 yards. I reproduced that load, and headed to the 800 yard range. I guessed at an MV of 2700 fps, and plugged that into the ballistic calculator. It center punched every steel out to 800 yards. So the BC and the MV seem to be correct. I am normally the guy that runs heavy, high BC bullets, but this lighter one, the rifle seems to like better. I checked the energy delivery out to 500 yards, and the increase in velocity looks to be delivering the same energy as the big 162's going 60 fps slower, at the muzzle.

My rental rifle is a standard 7mm-08, and it too shoots 162 A-maxes at 2640 fps MV, but it has a 3" longer barrel. wink

I found a legitimate 120 fps gain in velocity, shooting 162's out of 24" barrels, on two rifles last summer. That gain was from unformed brass, to formed brass with more powder. In my opinion it is the highest performance cartridge that will fit that action. It cheats wind like a 6.5mm, but hits much harder. Recoil is negligible, the case is just flat out efficient!

That's great news. As soon as my mags come in, all my parts go to Chad to be delivered to the guy you recommended. I'm having 7-08AI reamed at 24" in a Bartlein 8.7 twist. I hope the results are good.

It's a dandy of a round but something about 22 cal and 6mm just gets me going.

About how many grains of powder does 7-08 AI use with a 150?

Depends on what powder.

Up to 47.0 gr. nuts

Just wondering in general - wanted to do a recoil calculator to compare with 6.5 CM. Surprisingly close for pushing those weights of bullets that fast out of a short barrel.

Recoil is nothing to be concerned with for this cartridge. About the same as a standard 7mm-08, and my wife and oldest dughter have shot that one numerous times.

The 7-08 AI is how they should have introduced the 7-08 in the first place. It's the best short action round.

I was seriously thinking of using a bartlein barrel I have in .284 and chambering it in 7-08AI but I have .284WIN already which is kind of close to the to 7-08AI at 28in of barrel. It still might happen, I look at every time I'm in my shop and contemplate about it.

Why didn’t you go 7mm saw?

My gunsmith talked me in to it, he believes it the most inherently accurate 7mm cartridge.

Not real sure Clayton doesn't have the corner on the cartridge, and the reamer. He's got a small rifle primer, I've still got a large, and still have the same firing pin.

Same, same.

I will not argue that.

My 7 Rem Mag is very precise, but with that much powder, it takes some tuning. Today the 7mm-08 A.I. shot three inside .35" after cleaning. And that is with a button rifled Tikka barrel, that has been re-chambered.

Can't complain about that, imagine it will tighten up more after you get it fouled in.
My smith and I both shoot bench rest comp with .284's and with the way mine is built its on the edge for too much recoil for bench rest shooting. I just went with a HV barrel at 28'' my smith is running straight 1.25 at 30''.

For a pure hunting setup you can't go wrong with a 7mm08AI and the barrel life is dam good too.

I run the same brass clayton runs in my 7mm-08ai. Simple nk down and fire form. The nice thing about nking 308 down is it's super easy to do the false shoulder method.

I necked down some Lapua .308 and did not like what I got. The second batch of brass, I just bought 7mm-08 and fired it.

It is a 350 round barrel now. It is settled, but it is telling me it likes to be cleaned fairly often.

I bought my son a 6.5CM about 3yrs ago and I'm not to impressed although its a good shooting gun I think the CM cartridge is more fit for 6mm. I wouldn't be concerned about recoil in a 7-08 unless its in a Rem model 7 or similar frame. I regret not getting a 7-08 because he's fell in love with my most recent build in a .284win so I'll probably get another built for him thats more purposed for hunting.
