223 primer crimps

223 primer crimps - 11/29/16 04:24 AM

Processed and loaded around 1500 223 rounds over last few days. I don't have the fancy pocket swagger rom Dillon. I don't load enough 223 to make it a good buy. This load will last me quite a while. Anyway I just swage them on my Lyman case express. Have to dig out the crimp. Here is my experience with a bunch of range pickup.

Federal headstamp FC 223 - huge crimp. Lots of removal
Hornady headstamp 556 NATO - big crimp. Not as much as FC but substantial
Winchester headstamp psych WCC and WMA nato - medium crimp
Hornady headstamp 223 - medium crimp
PMC headstamp 223 - some crimped some not (maybe second firing)
Winchester headstamp 223 - no crimp
Remington RP 223 - no crimp

Anyone else had these same type of result

I have an RCBS Primer Pocket Swagger and I hate removing primer crimps. It's the the most dreadful task in reloading in my opinion. I treat crimped brass as emergency brass.

Same here. I wish I'd just picked up a Dillon Super Swage to begin with instead of fiddling with that piece of junk.

I process my 223 brass (and some 300 blk out) on a Dillon 1050, and station 2 has the crimp remover. It makes processing crimped brass very simple. Otherwise, it is a PITA.
