reloading 45 colt

I have a Schofield 45 colt, shooting hornady loads, picked up some brass to reload, the brass is 1/16 longer than the steel case horn. and won't load in the Schofield, thought about reloading the steel, some say yes and some say no. I have the pilot cutter on order to trim the brass, just curious to see what you all think.

Is it a 45 colt or a 45 s&w? Either way, I'd just trim the brass.

I don't think reloading steel cases is a good idea. I like to trim revolver brass anyway to get consistent crimps.

I would trim the brass cases and load them. I also would it with only the data for use in colt revolvers, There is some loading data for the Colt 45 data that should only be used in Ruger Blackhawks and Freedom Arms revolvers stay away from that.

The steel cases you speak of aren't just nickel plated are they? If they're nickel plated they can be loaded just the same as the straight brass, though the plating will probably chip when you trim them. Purely cosmetic.

I can't read the roll crimp on your gun but generally speaking, Schofield 45 is not the same as Colt 45. The Colt is longer by about 1/16". The Schofield can be shot in the Colt but not vice versa. If you have some too long, you can trim it. All else is the same.

make sure you keep the loads under 15,000 psi.

also I've never seen or heard of hornady making steel cases for the 45 colt so I'd be inclined to agree with what cblackall said. they're probably nickel.

Now I see why. The Hornady's are FTX. The case has to be shorter because the bullet is longer. I've had the same problems with my 45-70 Hornadys. Your standard dies won't crimp the shorter case either.
