Lyman Gen 6 Powder Combo

Finally broke down and ordered the Lyman Gen 6 Powder Scale/Dispenser Combo unit. I have been reloading for 40 years and have used the same RCBS Uniflow powder measure and balance beam scales since the beginning. This unit is extremely accurate, measured against my beam scale, and is going to be a big time saver when I am working up loads. Adjusting the Uniflow up .2 or .3 grains and weighing each ladder charge is time consuming and tedious. With this electronic unit, I simply change the load on the keypad and charge the next 5 rounds, step up to the next charge and so on. I wish I had bought one of these things a long time ago. Once I have the charge I want, I set the unit for auto charge. After charging the case, returning the pan to the scale starts the next load dispensing. By the time I have seated the bullet, I have the next charge waiting for me.

I'm with you, having used an earlier model Lyman for a few years. It's so much faster than the Lyman 55 and my beam scale. That said, you might have angered the 'beam scale people' with your comment. They're a touchy bunch.

I did pull my old Ohaus scale down a couple of weeks ago to show someone a basic reloading routine and helped them load a box of 22-250.

I've been reloading since '65 and the Lyman 6 is the way to go for me too.

I thought the Gen 6 was on the small side as far as capacity. I was told the Gen 5 was the one to buy. Was I told wrong????

The Lyman Gen 6 has a capacity of 1500 grains.

Im running a gen 6 with excellent results.

Update on Lyman Gen 6

I've been working up a hog/deer load for my 25-45 Sharps. I decided to do a comparison between the Lyman Gen 6 and the RCBS Uniflow powder measure and balance scale I have been loading with for 40 years. I prepped and primed 10 once fired cases and marked the primers on 5 to make sure and not get them mixed. The load I used was 28.2 grs. of H-335 behind an 87 gr. Sierra Spitzer bullet. I set the balance beam scale and tweaked the Uniflow measure to produce the charge. I weighed every charge individually and if it did not perfectly zero the balance beam scale, I dumped the charge and threw another until I had 5 exact charges as measured by the scale. I seated the bullets in these 5 and set them aside. I then calibrated and zeroed the Lyman Gen 6 and set the charge to 28.2 grs. on the keypad. As each load trickled into the pan, I took it straight off and charged a case with it. I did not check the charge against the balance beam scale. I loaded the first 5 charges it threw into the cases and seated the bullets.
I went over to my hay lot and set up my chronograph. I centered the sensor @ 12' from the muzzle of the 18" SRC barrel. I fired all five of the Lyman charged rounds first. I then laid the AR aside and let the barrel cool. Next, I fired all five of the Uniflow charged rounds. Here is the data I came up with as a comparison between the two powder charging systems. Again, 25-45 Sharps, 18" bbl, 87 gr. Sierra SP with 28.2 grs of H-335 powder.

The results of my comparison are that the Uniflow charges produced slightly higher avg. velocities of the string but that the Lyman charges produced more consistent velocities with less that half of the amount of extreme spread and about half the amount of standard deviation.
What I glean from this is that as long as I calibrate and zero the Lyman measure properly it is at least, if not more accurate, than the Uniflow measure from which I tediously weighed every single charge and hand picked only the ones that exactly balanced the beam scale.

These are the results that I came up with and others may find different results. As for me, I now am confident in the new Lyman Gen 6's ability to produce accurate, consistent loads that are more than satisfactory to me.
