410 Miss Fires

410 Miss Fires - 06/17/16 09:17 PM

I loaded many 12 and 20GA shotgun shells back in 70 & 80's. With very few misfires. Been loading 410's for the last few years. Seems like I'm getting more misfires with the 410 reloads. one out of hundred miss fire. Primes show good firing pin punch.

What primers are you using, and how have they been stored?

When I started loading the 410 I was using old 20 year old primes. Stored in a military Ammo box in the house. So I switched to new CCI 209 primers thinking that was my problem. Still having a lot of miss fires with the new CCI primers.

That makes me think it is more firearm related. Have you shot any factory ammo through it lately?

I have the problem in two shotguns. Remington 870 and a Browning Citori. I've never shot factor ammo out of either shotgun. Maybe I just got 5000 bad primers. Which brand on primers is the best 209??

I would have no problems buying CCI, Federal, Win, Rem

Do your shells drop freely into the chamber and is the rim making full contact all around the case? I am thinking it could be the shell since you already switched primers and guns: The .410 can be tricky to load. Over crimping can bulge the case or the top near the crimp. The shell appears to chamber fine but is actually not fully seated. Firing pin strike can finish driving the shell forward into the chamber without the oomph necessary to light off the primer. It can also cause the primer to strike off center causing a FTF.

Like yourself, I have loaded thousands of 12 and 20 without a problem. I can't tell you how many .410 I screwed up trying to get the crimp right....I sorted by type and markings and still occasionally run into a crimp issue. If they weren't so @!#$ expensive I would be tempted to stick with store bought.
I use Win, CCI, Federal. Have a box on Rem to try but never had a primer misfire yet.

My 410 hulls have had a few reloads run though them. I watch them for cracks and not holding the primer. Maybe I need to buy new hulls and start over. Thanks
