Primer issues with .223

Primer issues with .223 - 03/28/16 03:27 PM

Hey guys,

How many of y'all have an issue with primers getting crushed when using an primer hand loader. I find that about 1 in every 10-12 goes in wrong and then gets crushed and I have to push it out and try again. I used the mil bushing to expand the primer pocket but it still sometimes gets crushed. Is this just part of it or am I missing something?

Most likely you are not fully removing the crimp on military brass. You need this -

Hornady Primer pocket tool

That works great on crimped pockets, I chuck mine in a small bench top drill press and go to town.

This is a better tool. Doesn't remove mass from the case.

I use the RCBS press mounted decrimper, and it quite well.

From my experience, the primer crimp removal drills that shave the pocket work only so so. They remove the material right at the corner, but sometimes the crimp goes deeper than that. Plus, it opens up the pocket by removing lots of material and wears out the primer pocket much faster. And I will often still have primers hang up or go in crooked with these.

The Dillon swagger works 100%, and does a much better job of getting the crimp fully removed without removing "meat" from the pocket area. It will last for more reloads this way. I have used both tools many times, and the swagger method is a much more reliable crimp removal with less problems afterwards.

The L-n-L swager that fits their progressive works very well

thanks guys. I have the RCBS prep station with the military crimp remover but for some reason I guess I am not doing a good enough job removing the crimp. I like that Dillon Super Swage. Looks pretty simple. I will add that to my list of items I need to get.

Yes, generally you have to remove A LOT of material to get rid of a heavy crimp.

I use an RCBS swaging die on a Rockchucker press. It works fairly well but lately I have better success swaging and using the uniformer. I have also noticed that Winchester primers seem to seat easier than others, unfortunately I'm running low on them .

If i had my choice , I'd buy the Dillon super swager. It is hands down the best I have used.
