223 dies.... FL or small base? - 01/20/16 03:05 AM
Looking at buying some 223 dies to reload for my AR. Should I get a small base set or just full length?

Regular FL dies are fine.

^^^^^^^^^Agree^^^^^^^^^
Standard full length dies have worked well for the ARs I have loaded for.

Depends on the gun. Some AR's I've seen required small base dies. Depends on how "tight" the chamber of your gun is.
However there are some pro's of getting RCBS X Die's for 223. After your first sizing and trimming, you may not have to trim your brass as often.

Also depends on where the brass came from

I'd get the RCBS dies out of the three you mentioned

Only get small-base dies if regulars don't work. Can't go wrong with RCBS & I think the X-Dies may be just the ticket!

Small base dies. Eliminate problems before they start. I learned the hard way.

Small base here. My Hornady dies weren't enough.

I've been shooting and loading for AR's for over 3 decades and have never needed small base dies for any of them. I have 3 of them right now and use standard dies for them. I use Lee,Hornady and RCBS 223 dies for all of them. They all load very accurate ammo.
