22-250 - 11/20/15 06:23 PM
I have a savage axis 22-250 and I think it has 1:12 twist.
Will a 63 gr. Sierra SP bullet stabilize and does anyone have load recommendations?
I have not ever loaded for this caliber.
I appreciate any help.
Thanks

I have shot heavier from a 1/12 twist so it should not be an issue at 22-250 speeds.
I like AR Comp but Varget/CFE223/XBR8208 and IMR 4064 have all done well for me.
Heavy bullets get iffy in a 22-250

I'd try the CFE223 first, myself. The 63 grain Sierra is short for its weight and is the heavy bullet most likely to stabilize in a slow twist .22-250. My guess is that it will be fine in a 1:12 (it stabilized in my 1:14), but there's only one way to find out.
BTW, the load books show Superformance as the velocity champ; I've had very indifferent results with it myself and found the book max loads to be way high in my rifles. Of course, YMMV.

One of my favorite bullets! My.22-250 has a 1-14 twist & shoots the 63gr Sierra SMP very accurately. I settled on H380 but I've gotten good groups with this bullet using just about any suitable powder. In my Sako/Shilen it shoots 1/2" & below easily when I do my part. This Semi-Pt bullet has shot well in several other different .224 cal rifles that I own with many different twists/velocities. I believe the "Semi-PT" has something to do with it's accuracy as I have had similar experience with Sierra's 50gr SMP also. An identical H380 load in my .22-250, but with Sierra 65gr SBT GK's, keyholes!
FWIW

The 63 Sierra is the most accurate bullet I have found for my 225 Win, which has a 14" twist.

Thanks for the help! I've got a bunch of the 63's on hand and am hopeful they will work. I've got some h380 also that I finally got a finicky 257 Roberts to shoot
It wouldn't in my Tikka I:14. It loves the 45gr TSX and near max load of RL-15. They're expensive but I don't punch much paper and it's killed everything I've shot with it.
