Looking at buying a few dozen boxes of this. So Green Tip is armor piercing? So is it considered FMJ? confused2

Being a military round it is a non-expanding FMJ as required by the Hague Convention, but it is not "armor piercing" in the usual use of the phrase. It's not gonna' penetrate a tank.

edited to add: I think the "armor piercing" reputation may have come from the recent ban-scare of earlier this year.

"real" 62 gr. "green tip penetrator" is 5.56X45mm not .223 Remington. Might matter depending on the gun.

It has a steel core and will penetrate better than standard FMJ, but yeah, it's not going through a tank.

It will penetrate 1/4" plate steel at 300 yds. Our drill sergeants demonstrated it to us in basic training.

What happens when all the people hoarding the firearms... are the one that turn into zombies. Heavily armed deranged killer infected horde.

Think we can sell trophy zombie hunts? I guess the biggest problem we have will be HF vs. LF zombies. They will score differently.

I don't need a lot of steel core, but it's handy to have if you need to poke a hole in something a little harder than an animal. When Federal Green Tip prices went high......

I bought a bunch of ZQI branded 5.56/62gr steel core (NATO SS109)at Walmart. The cost was $9.95 per box of 30, so about $0.33/rd. It's made in Turkey by a company called MKE - a reputable company over there. Loading a mag with both the real Federal Green Tip & ZQI, I couldn't detect any shooting difference at all. Same POI at 100 yards. Certainly not an amzing price, but just low enough for target practice, without having to resort to steel cased ammo.

Twenty boxes (600 rounds) fit neatly into one those cheapo plastic Plano boxes also at Walmart.

FWIW, I also buy and shooot ZQI ammo in 9mm and 7.62x51. Been happy with all of it.

M855 ball is the green tipped 5.56 ammo. It is NOT armor piercing, and it was never supposed to be advertised as such. The penetrator is supposed to aid in defeating barriers and soft body armor, but it is not armor piercing. That would be like calling surplus 7.62x54r "armor piercing" just because it has a steel core. The God's honest truth is that regular old 7.62 NATO fmj ammo defeats barriers more effectively than 5.56 fmj with the penetrator.

Yep, steel core/jacket alloy bullets are especially common in steel cartridge ammo in .223, 7.62x39.

But not so much so, in brass cased 5.56mm 62gr. - from a NATO spec manufacturer....

^^^^

Yep. Magnetic 5.56 and .223 plus the 7.62X39 is almost always in a lacquered steel case, not brass.
