Powders for the 25 calibers

Powders for the 25 calibers - 09/24/15 03:23 AM

I'm curious what you guys use for the 25-06 and 257 Weatherby. I know that they both need slow burning powder, but I read somewhere that there are newer powders on the market that are more efficient with the small bullet, big case equation. I read that H1000 is pretty advanced and just wandered what you guys that load the quarter bores use.

Thanks!

I tried 7828 and R25 for my 257. It likes the R25 nearly pushed to max load the best. My Wby was never better than an inch gun (100 yards) with factory loads but the R25 hand loads have it down to a .75 gun now. A lot of guys like 7828 I stopped using it because of reasearch saying it was real temp sensitive. And Thor's hammer 257 pushing 117 grain Sst's does not need any more issues with temperature. You have to shoot it real slow.

I have heard great things about H1000 but it was a unicorn when things were scarce. Long range shooters love H1000.

Tried 7828 in the 257 and didn't like it too much. H1000 on the other hand has worked real well at near max with 110 accubonds.

4831 and 110gr Accubonds work great in the 25-06.

In the .25-06s I load for, IMR4831 and Re-22 give fine accuracy at top velocities in bullets weighing from 100-120 grs.

I run IMR 4831 with 100 gr nosler BTs in my 257 wby mag and it shoots great! I tried 7828 sc with 115 gr TSX and the accuracy just wasn't there but, it very well could have been a temperature issue because it was around 80-85 degrees the day I tested the loads with 7828 sc. Either way I believe I'll stick with the 4831

No experience with the Weatherby, but 4350 and 4831 are fine powders for the 25-06. I shoot a max load of IMR 4350 behind 115gr NBTs/117gr SGKs - 3050 FPS out of a 22" barrel and sub-MOA.

I use 7828 near a max load under a 100 gr matching. It's given me great accuracy out to 400 yards.

somewhere near 49gr of IMR4350 and 117gr bullets has been a sweet spot for me in several 25/06s

Re: Powders for the 25 calibers - 09/24/15 09:50 PM

I have used/tried several powders in my 2 25-06's.

Used:
IMR4831 52.5 gr pushing a Speer 120 BTSP
RL19 - 52 gr pushing the Nos. 110 AB
H4831 - don't have my book at hand but used this to push the 110 AB's
IMR4350 - older load, pushing a 100 gr Speer BT
RL-26 - don't have this load handy - pushing a 117 SGK but only around 2650 in the one rifle I tried it in.

Tried:
IMR7828
H1000
H4350
AA4350
RL25 (got too hot too quick in my rifles)

I've got some RL 23 I'd like to try if I could ever find a starting/stopping load somewhere.

Same. We use 49.5gr IMR 4350 and 120Gr Sierras in both mine and my son's rifle it is very consistent and accurate.

I THINK my pet .25-06 load was either 52.5 or 53.5 H-4831 under the great Hornady 120gr Interlock Hollow Point.

.257 look at the 7828SSC and H-1000
