Powder suggestions for .260 rem

Just purchased a tikka ctr .260 and have bought some bullets (123 grain Sierra matchking and Nosler 130 accubond ). I have Varget and IMR 4064 on hand as well as Rl-22 . What powder would be the best ? I am interested in other powders as well. I bought the rifle used and have some loads from the previous owner using 4064 and 4350 so I'll be looking to pick up some 4350. I have also heard rl-19 may be one to try . The loads I have from the previous owner were used at 5000+ feet elevation how will that change at my 880ft elevation?

Anything in the 4350 burn rate is ideal for the 260 Rem. Varget would be decent with the lighter bullets, also. 4064 would work, but you will not get the higher speeds, like with the slower powders.

4064 for 100 grain bullets. 4350 or R17 for 120's and up, though other powders will work fine also.

H-4350

5000' to 880' elevation, the rifle will still shoot just as consistenly, but there will be more bullet drop and more wind drift at the lower elevation.

Thanks for the info men. Looks like I'll be picking up some H-4350 and try some different weights and brands of bullets as well.

Imr 4451 might be worth a shot. Lots of guys use h4831sc for the 140's too.

A coworker has that exact rifle and was shooting the 130 accubonds. He got it down in the .4 range before switching to scenars. I probably spelled that wrong. I just ask him for his load data for that bullet. I'll post it when he gets back to me with the info.

NOTE!!! work up your loads from a minimum.

His best load with the 130 accubonds was 45.6 of H4350. He also said it was a hot load.

I vote for H4350 as well.

139-142gr bullets:

There are three powders that people use with the 139-142gr bullets:

· H4831SC (start 44)
· H4350 (start 40)
· Reloder 17 (start 40)

The max loads are usually within 2.0-2.5gr of those starting loads.

If you see any high pressure signs at those starting loads, back off immediately and figure out what's going on.

With the two Hodgdon powders, you should be able to get 2800-2850 fps in a 24-28" barrel.

With Reloder 17, 2900-2950 should be easily achievable.

In the .260 I've had better luck with BR2 primers than210M's, but there is not a consensus on this. There are a variety of brass choices and it doesn't matter too much, other than people have noticed the Remington brass is softer and more inconsistent than Lapua, Winchester, Nosler, etc.

Length to ogive is 2.30 inches.

Check out the Reliant Powder website, and look at the RL19 & RL 22 loads, the full list of RL poweders tool bar is on the laft side fo the page. Select a bullet 1st from the Caliber chosen then, open the powder list....oe was that the Hodgdon List??? I spent too long last nite on both of them. The default powder setting in Reliant is AR???....which drives me nutz...

The Hodgdon website has lots of good info too...ans I saw enough good looking H4350 loads in my 3 calibers to warrant trying some out in all 3 - 260, 270 & 300WSM....and make buying multiple powders for each caliber and bullet weight a thing of the past.

Reloader 17 and 19,H4350,H414,Hybrid 100V are the main powders I use with my 260 Remington and 6.5 Creedmoor

Looked around a little yesterday didn't find any h4350 only imr 4350 they did have h4831. I know there is some difference between h and imr 4350 such as temp sensitivity but is it enough to make a big difference in velocity and accuracy?

Did you happen to see any imr 4451?

I will look next Tuesday when I am in Weatherford again.

H414 is a good alternative to H4350, and easier to find.

My CTR likes H4350 with 123 and 140 grain bullets. Didn't do near as well with the H4831SC.

I've loaded for 3 different CTRs. No problems finding sub MOA loads with either flavor 4350 and 123 Scenars/AMaxes. Went to H4831sc with 139 Scenars and 140s.

Tikkas aren't hard to get to shoot.....

I had really good results with 7828ssc and 140 bergers.
