I stopped using a chrono years ago. I don't trust them, and for my style of shooting they just don't matter. One less thing to drag to the range.

I know not everyone shoots long range, but this is what I do. Find an accurate load that is well below pressure signs at 100 or 300 yards. Shoot that load to all ranges that you have plans for, the further the better. Keep dope or notes for all the data you have received. Plug all your numbers into a ballistic calculator except for velocity. Many programs have a velocity truing feature, or you can simply change the velocity until it matches your dope. It's quite simple. Make sure you repeat these steps in cold and hot weather to watch for velocity changes in your load.

Only one thing to watch out for on ballistic calculators. Just remember garbage in equals garbage out. Keep as many accurate environmentals as possible. A kestrel 4000+ is such a handy tool for shooting and building reliable dope charts.

i have the magneto-speed. love it super easy to setup and don't have to worry about calling out cold range and setting a normal chrony up!

CED M-2 Most bang for your buck. Easy to use and since the screens and the computer are separate, you don't have to worry about shooting your chrono.

The chrono readings I've inputted into ballastic software never gave me the correct DOPE, always have to validate after trying it out on the range.

Exactly. Always believe the bullet.

Just to be clear, the barrel-mounted one is the Magnetospeed. This is the only one I've ever used, so have nothing to compare to, but I like not having to set up anything in front of the bench. At the public ranges I use, that seems like a pain.

They both have positives and negatives. If you're checking multiple guns, a Chrony is prbably going to be quicker so you don't have to switch it from barrel to barrel. For just one gun, the Magnetospeed is quick. Also, for indoor ranges where you can't go down range to set up a normal chrony the Magnetospeed is the only way to do it. My only beef with the Magnetospeed is the fact that you're mounting something to the end of your barrel. This changes barrel harmonics. It might not be much, and probably depends on the gun, but the potential is there for a change in accuracy or POI.

I have a friend that is a certified chrony shooter. lol For him, the Magnetospeed means he doesn't shoot the thing. I have not had such issues in many years of shooting through the screens of a Chrony. I've run both an Oehler 35P and now a Shooting Chrony. That little Chrony has been some of the best $130 my wife ever spent!

They're 'giving these away' over at MidwayUSA for $69 right now - very cool that they connect to smartphone for remote:
