Sierra 65 grain Gameking feedback needed

Anyone ever use this bullet for pigs and coyotes?

It should work fine. On pigs if pushed too fast you might get over expansion giving the typical cup and core design. Also giving this design I would stay off the shoulder.

That bullet or the 55gr Sierra GameKing HP BT both will hammer hogs from a .223. Another often over looked bullet is the Hornady 55gr SP there is no telling how many deer /pigs/coyotes/ WT's my friends and family have shot with the Hornady bullet from .223's and 22-250.
I just got my order in from Mid-South for another 6000 of them.

I also order these in bulk to load for my AR. I am getting a little better than 2900 fps out of my 16" 1/9 barrel. In my slower twist bolt action, I load 50 grain ballistic tips or hollow points. Sierra makes great bullets and if you find a good load for your rifle, I bet they would perform well.

That bullet often comes up in the yearly threads of using a 223 for deer and hogs. There are several forum members that use it with good results from their reports. Much like the Winchester 64gr power point it will work.

There is a reason .224 bullets have been improving for bigger game, so many use them and not just in Texas for bigger game. The list is getting longer of bullets that are designed for better performance on the bigger stuff. Some of those .224 pills that work well, the two above plus Nosler Partition and bonded, Swift Sirocco in 62 and 75gr are a few that come to mind. All of those will work well in the head or chest for making dead critters. The 75gr A-max also has a following.


Sure about any bullet will work on a ear hole shot on hogs but sometimes that is not an option especially after that first shot when a sounder is truing to escape.

They have worked great on everything I've shot with them out of my AR. I think I load mine over 24.5gr of RL-15 for my 7 twist. It is the most accurate load out of my AR and the deer and pigs don't like them at all.

How do they do on pigs shot broadside (heart/lung)?

Kills them just as dead as anything else.

I've killed a few pigs with that 65 gr Sierra. Good accurate bullet. I can get better accuracy with that bullet in my 223 than I can with the 60 gr Partition.

The 65gr SGK is an excellent hunting bullet.

I've killed a couple pigs and lots of varmints with 55 GKs so I'd think the 65s would be a little better on pigs.

That is a smoking deal. I ordered some elsewhere but they had another type I needed. I'm looking to try them in a 1:12 223 and Nosler said they will work.

I've shot several hogs with it but only in the head so that doesn't tell you much, but I have shot several deer with them. This bullet comes out of my Ruger#3's 22" 1-in-10" .223 barrel right at 2,800 fps with 28gr of H380. Very accurate! I've shot 8 deer, all at ranges of 50 to 100yds. All were Texas hill-country deer that are about 100lbs on the hoof. Two were head shots which tells me nothing. The others were body shots. Two of those took second shots, although it probably wasn't necessary. Only one bullet fully exited. Most of the others bullets ended up under the hide on the opposite side or embedded in the off shoulder. The bullet mushrooms beautifully & often sheds its core where it stops. The remains weighs about 50grs or there about. As expected, the bullet impact has noticeably less initial physical effect on the animal than larger calibers & usually without an exit hole, tracking could be much harder. I don't hunter deer with my .223's anymore, just not ideal.

If you want to start a real argument with hunters say the .223 is not a deer cartridge. I'm inclined to say its ok when conditions are right, but far from ideal. Try those 65gr SGK on hogs & publish your results here - it would be interesting. To me they're only hogs & YMMV.

If you are handloading, try the 65 SGK with 26 grs of Varget and CCI BR4 primers. I'm tweaking this load, but like the results (on paper that is) so far. Should be fine for hunting pigs with head shots and other varmints. I like the 70 gr Hornady GMX as well.
