Are these the same or is the long colt a longer cartage as the name suggests.

Long colt is the same as 45 colt. 45 colt is the correct term. You will never see "long colt" printed on any ammo or firearms. It is a nickname given to the 45 colt to differentiate it from the 45 ACP. Which is Automatic Colt Pistol.

Ok thanks. I was looking at a 1866 uberti in my buddy's shop. Wanted to make sure it was something I could find ammo for.

Factory ammo is widely available but expensive. $40-50/50 rounds. I reload plinking ammo for mine for about $14/100 rounds. If you find you enjoy the pistol find someone to reload for you.

Lever action actually. I hope to enjoy it. I have an immaculate Ted Williams that I've been wanting to hunt with but don't want to scratch it up. Having something a little nicer in the safe I shouldn't feel so bad if the Ted got a knick or 2.

The uberti should be alot of fun to shoot steel with.

Actually, the "Long" Colt terminology came along when the Army had two different .45 single-action revolvers in service. The .45 Schofield (aka .45 S&W, I believe) was in use at the same time as the .45 Colt. The Schofield round was shorter, and it became expedient to refer to the Colt round as the "long" one.
