Anyone use the Hornady American Whitetail Ammo? - 11/05/14 03:24 AM

I was wondering if anyone has used the Hornady American ammo, I was thinking of buying a box to try out in my .243. Has anyone used it and what were your thoughts and experience with it.

It's a 100gr interlock bullet -- should be fine for deer, etc.

Intended use?

Sure it will do as well as any other soft point. I would stay away from the shoulder bone.

It wouldn't group to save my life in my old .243 I was sighting in for my girlfriend. So I just took my 7 mag and told her it was the same caliber. Well she shot her first deer, a little 8 point.

Pie plate accuracy. It's cheap for a reason. Surprised Hornady put out such sub-par ammo.

My 700 sps tactical loves it. 1.5" groups all day. It shoot better than hornady superformance 165 gn gmx.

Well I bought a box to try, I'll start to use it once I run out of the half box of Federal ammo. I see some people here are not getting good accuracy with it. I've used some old Hornady .243 ammo before and it work ok but switched to the Federal ammo because it was cheaper. I saw the Hornady American Whitetail ammo on sale so I decided to give it a try.

Bought some last week, my .270 didn't like it, 2" groups. But it will shoot 1/2" groups with the Hornaday Custom ammo.

I get 1" groups at 100 yards and about 2.5" groups at 200 yards with my Rem 700 .243 using it. Same as I get with my .270 using it.

The Hornady Interlock is a fine bullet. How the ammo shoots in your particular rifle is never for sure. My guess is that for any given rifle, the American Whitetail ammo will shoot acceptably and kill critters dead.

I tried it in 25-06 but my
Rifle didn't like it, so I stick with Hornaday SST 117 gr and the rifle shoots it lights out and so far it is 2/2 on deer this year.

My .243 really likes blue box federal, can get sub-MOA groups all day long at 100 with my little savage axis, but funny thing is it doesn't geoup with more expensive ammo. I have not tried the whitetail ammo in .243 and won't due to it being essentially the same bullet as the blue box federal.
