Need help starting a cartridge display.

Need help starting a cartridge display. - 06/14/13 08:23 PM

While shooting prairie dogs I found two pieces of 50 BMG brass and one fired 50 SMK. Once I got home and cleaned them up the light bulb appreared. I would like to have one example of a case loaded with a bullet. Once I finally get it all rounded up, I'll build a cabinet with glass doors to display it. On the shelf, below the cartridge I'll label the case, and what bullet is in it. May even put who sent it, and where they are in the world

I already have .223, 22-250, 243, 260, 308 Win, 30-30 and 7 Rem Mag.

I would like to fill in the middle. I'll pay for the components and mailing it to me. I know it's usually a bad idea, but I'll send cash to whom ever is willing to help.

Thanks in advance!

I have a 50 BMG loaded with a 750 Hornady A-max. I need to pull the bullet, as the powdwer charge was too high. It's a great display piece, just don't fire it. Also have some 408 Chey Tac, 300 Win Mag, and a few others.

As always Chad, you're my hero! I'll take em.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 06/15/13 12:41 AM

Have thought about doing something like that. Have a few around here some being not all that common. 22 Hornet, 5.7X28, 218 Bee, 221, 222, 22-243, 25-20, 257 Roberts, 257 wby, 6.5-54, 6.5 Grendel, 6.5-284, 264 Win, 7-30, 7mm08, 7X57, 7stw, 30 carbine, 338 Federal, 350 Rem Mag, 38-55, 375 Win, 45-70, 50BMG that are not on the list above. Most of it is loaded ammo so would rather meet instead of mailing.

Have a few others I reloaded in the past but saving them for a display of my own.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 06/15/13 02:08 AM

I can get some 25-06, 30-06, 303 brit. and I'm pretty sure I have some .244 ( 6mm Rem)around as well. I have a few pistol stuff that is a little odd 41rem mag, 44 russian and I might have a few 38super autos.

I have no problems sending them just let me know what you might want/need.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 06/15/13 02:57 AM

Thanks a bunch dee. I'm not going to start on a pistol collection until I get the rifle collection done. Thank you for the offer though.

The four rifle rounds you mentioned I do not have, and would really appreciate them.

Wait, wait wait! Don't you shoot a 7mm-08 and .280? grin
Posted By: dee

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 06/15/13 03:26 AM

I have a 7mm-08 AI but no standard 7mm-08 besides some non formed 308 that's just necked down. Don't have a 280 anymore but might have a 270 or 7x57 laying around.

You want primer and powder or just a seated round.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 06/15/13 03:16 PM

Just a seated bullet, please sir.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 06/15/13 06:08 PM

kmon1 knocked out quite a few. I could help with 204, 6x45 (6mm-223), and 6.5x55. PM me your address if you want them.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 06/15/13 06:54 PM

Those would be most helpful. Yes, I think kmon1 has been doing this longer than a bunch of us. He's had more time to collect cool stuff!

I've got a 6.8 I could send your way. It's unfired but has a dent in one side of the case. I could pull the bullet, but don't have 6.8 dies to reseat it.

38-40 WCF if interested.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 06/16/13 05:47 PM

I pull the bullet, send the bullet and case. I'm crafty enough to reseat the bullet without the proper die. That way you don't have to mess with it. Thank you!

Thank you for the help!

Having full ammo boxes in a set, I understand. If you can help, great! If not, not problem.

Sounds like this display should be stacking up, don't have any wildcats not mentioned... do look forward to seeing it when it is done. Might have some pistol for you once you start a second one.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 06/19/13 02:25 AM

Have most of the list from the ammo closet together. Do you want rimfire also? 17 Mach II, 17 HMR, 5mm, 22 short, 22 Mag, 22WRF, think missing 22 long and 22 Auto but will check one other old ammo box.

Also have added 17 Remington, 270 WSM and 223 WSSM to the bag

Looks like you still need a real short fat 30 (30BR) smile I have a case that screwed up when I necked it up that I think I can seat a bullet in and if turned facing properly it would work for what you are doing.

I also have a 6BR case the primer pocket is blown that I can seat a bullet in. A 6 dasher that I was going to make a modified case and a 220 swift I can send ya if you want them shoot me your address in a PM and I'll get them to you. Cool idea!

Not yet, but we aint finished yet.

I'll take a live round, if that's all ya got. Other guys have sent me several live rounds. I can't decide of putting live rounds in the tumbler is safer, or polishing them on the cotton buffing wheel. Metal can get a little hot on the buffing wheel.

It would be tumbler for me. The biggest safety factor in tumbling live rounds is breaking down the powder; thus, changing the burn rate. You won't be burning any of this powder, though...

Not to take away from the OP but I'm on the fence about this as I see it no difference than ammo riding around in a rough truck all year on the farm day in day out.

Fireman I'm gonna look today in my dad's safe for the 244 stuff whether I find it or not the package will ship tomorrow.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 07/04/13 03:14 PM

I appreciate it!

As far as cleaning the live rounds, 7 live were put in the tumbler for a total of 2 1/2 hours yesterday evening. It just knocked off the high spots, they were so tarnished. I took them to the cotton buffing wheel to see what would happen. Viola! The brass looked brand new again. Normally I wear leather gloves, but in this case I buffed with bare hands. When the case got too hot to hold I sat it down, and picked up another one, repeat. I seriously doubt I'll have a bullet pop out with this method.

Some of you folks may remember when guns and bullets weren't bad to show in public.
My brother had a display with maybe 40 or 50 bullets in it and I took it so school for show and tell in the first or second grade....LOL!

Well you're in luck I found 1 decent 244 to send your way. I'm gonna label the rounds with particulars to bullet loaded and send it.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 07/15/13 05:02 PM

I decided this would get away from me pretty quick. So I got all of them out, cleaned the ones that needed it, labeled each case, and cut some adhesive magnet to stick to each case head. Right now they're resting on a purlin near my reloading bench. When I build a cabinet for them I'll dado a groove, screw in a strip of steel and set the cartridges on the steel. That way as I continue to recieve more I can adjust things. The label that is on the case won't be visible, I'll rotate that to the back, and label the shelf below the cartridge.

If the case has the same bullet diameters, they touch, when a case moves to the next size up, there is a gap.

.17 to .25 cal

.264 (6.5mm) to .30 cal

8mm to .50 cal

From .17 Mach II to .50 BMG is 44" long.

JG,

You might check the diameter of your "223" - it looks like it may be about 6mms. up

I'll put a caliper on it. It very well may be. Very good possibility I made a mistake somewhere. That's a bunch of cartridges to sort through!

It arrived sometime in the last two days. Thank you for the awesome job of labeling everything!

Hopefully I'll have time to add them to the list, polish, and put them in the display this evening.

You don't have a 35 Remington cartridge. I have a couple of live rounds, but no dies. I can't disassemble to make a dummy round. I could disassemble and send the case. Surely somebody can get you a dummy 35 round.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 08/04/13 01:57 AM

Many, many of those cartridges are live rounds. It doesn't bother me, if you don't mind sending it.

Is it Ok to send live ammo in the US mail? That doesn't sound like something that's Ok.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 08/04/13 09:16 AM

Live ammo is very ship-able. Just tape a ORM-D label and good to go via FedEx.

Live ammo has been delivered many times to my mailbox.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 08/05/13 11:16 AM

The 06 round I sent is a Remington Bronze point not a Nosler. Kinda the old school predecessor to all the tipped bullets and the inspiration for the original ballistic tip.

I've got about three or four 30-06 cartridges. I guess I didn't swap out for what you sent.

No problem, it was my mistake thinking I was the only onr that sent a 30 gi, just knew a Nosler wasn't what i had sent.

On a side note I've pondered for a good while to do the same, as it is a neat idea and concept. This just may provoke me or motivate me to do so.

I didn't read the other posts but I'll give ya a Nosler AB 6.8mm & a Hornady LeverEvolution .45/70. Send me a PM if you need these 2.

Well, if you claim if first, I'll send what duplicates I have to you.

Is the above list what you have, or what you need?

And sending live ammo in the mail is a good way to meet a Postal Inspector. Just sayin'.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 06/24/14 12:52 PM

How did the display turn out?
Posted By: J.G.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 06/24/14 04:53 PM

I have not built the cabinet for it. I havn't recieved any other contributions in a long time. Maybe I should call it good and go with what I have. They are all cleaned, labeled, and sorted left to right smallest caliber to largets and shortest case within calber to largest within caliber. I think I have more .22 cal than any other caliber.

You are the top contributor by a wide margin.

Re: Need help starting a cartridge display. - 06/24/14 11:20 PM

I know you already have the 7mmX57 Mauser, but how about a .275 Rigby? They're the same cartridge, but .275 Rigby was the English version. That head-stamp is hard to find. I have my Dad's old .275 Rigby and I know there's some old shells laying in the bottom of the gun cabinet at my mother's house. (I shoot 7x57 through it) I reload for 7x57 so I can dummy you up a round.
