224 69gr Sierra Matchking HPBT - 09/16/12 04:13 AM

I need help. Can I use this for deer and hog?
I have a hard time finding 65gr Sierra Gameking bullet and with this (69gr) I get more accuracy than other bullets.

Thanks.

If it is like a lot of the matchking bullets like the 80 gr ones I know have very thin jackets and actmore like fragile varmint bullets when they hit something. Are you reloading or shooting factory rounds? if you can get the accuracy from then Nosler Partition 60gr bull3s are some of the best for deer in a 22 caliber.

What round and rifle are you shooting'

Yes I am reloading. I use it for long distance target in 3gun match.

Though the years I have taken a couple of does with the 69 SMK. If you have the confidence to make head shots they work. If you are a body shooter do no use them. The 69 SMK with its light weight and high velocity goes off like a hand grenade on impact and you do not get sufficient penetration to insure a clean kill. If ya want a more reliable match bullet for hunting try the 70gr Berger VLD. They work very well.

Is the OAL of the 70gr Berger VLD fit the AR15 mag (2.260)?

You'll be fine with it. Shoot them in the head or neck, and you'll be good to go. Nothing wrong with a .223 taking deer or hogs.

I get mine at MidwayUSA - they have them in stock now. They run sales on them pretty often, but it is usually a dollar or so off.

I shoot the 60gr nosler partitions. I shoot them in my 20" heavy barrel with 1-9 twist. They are very effective on deer and hogs. I have not shot them in my 16" 1-9 twist ar yet but the 20" is very good.

Go for head shots only and I'm sure they will work fine. However my favorite load without a doubt for deer and hogs are with the 65gr Sierra gk's w 24.5gr of ramshot tac. They lay em out pretty good with goofball sized holes on the exiting side. I would keep checking powder valley and when they get them in stock then load up good. smile

Speaking of which they are in stock now for 17.55$/100. Time to load up!

I have had the same experience with the Hornady 68 grain bthp and Sierra 69 grain bthp- they do not penetrate at all. A body shot with one of these bullets, IMO, is not a good idea. The 223 can take deer, but with good hunting bullets.

Not a good idea. You will ruin a lot of meat and insure a slow death.

Here is a deer taken with the 77grn SMK
