Blackhorn 209

Has anybody tried the blackhorn 209 powder? I just ordered some this week. Hopefully it will be here by next weekend so I can sight in my CVA Optima.

Great stuff! Ballistics are just as good as real BP but much cleaner burning than BP or the synthetics. The manufacturer recommends Magnum 209 primers and a specific style of breech plug to insure reliable ignitions.

Make sure you go buy the Breech Plug specific for Blackhorn 209-- they run $30-- cabelas sometimes has them in stock but I'd get on Amazon and get it quick.

Haven't ever needed magnum 209s-- I shoot the winchester blackbox 209s- they come in a 100pk. Never had an ignition issue in 3 different CVAs with BH209 and those primers... but I used the BH209 breechplug.

I bought the Blackhorn 209 breech plug about a month ago. I just picked up some Federal 209A shotgun primers yesterday. Thanks for the info.

Not in a CVA but I wont shoot anything but BH209 in a hunting situation. I use 80 to 100gr BH209, THOR solid copper 300gr projectile, and FIOCCI 209 primers in my NEF muzzleloader. Have taken deer, hogs, cow buffalo, and a cow watusi with the same setup. Never had a miss / hang fire.

I'm a big fan of BH209. I've been using it since it was introduced 6 or7 years back. Very consistent(I weigh my loads) extremely easy to clean up with Hoppe's etc. Consistent heavy pressure on ramrod and keeping breech plug flame channel clean per instructions on BH web site make for very reliable shooting. My regular hunting load is 105 to 110gr of BH 209, Harvester 300 gr PT Gold bullet, black Harvester Crush Rib sabot and CCI 209M primer. Very accurate and effective load. The heavy bullet has better long range retained energy to take care of that occasional long shot.

Jim--- are you going with 110gr by weight?! That would be north of 150gr by volume wouldn't it?

I shoot 80gr by weight and its around 105-107gr by volume.

That's by volume or 77 grains by weight using the formula BH publishes on its web site. I weigh all my loads for consistency. I use Lane tubes to hold my bullet, sabot and powder. It works well for a quick reload. I use a Spin Jag starter and also have one on my ram rod so the bullet rotates as it loads. At the range I use one of Lehigh Defense Ultimate range rods that rotates in the handle as you seat the load. Knight also has that rod back on their web site. Best accessory I own. It has a bore guide and an adjustable collar to set the length of the rod that goes down the barrel. Makes a great witness mark to avoid double loading your ML.

Jim you and I are cut of the same cloth! I'll never go back after I started weighing my charges... and using a Spin Jag rod! I'll have to check out the Lehigh Defense rod.
