cva wolf shooting all over the place - 12/26/15 10:29 PM

I have a cva wolf that I just got I went and bought Winchester 209 primers and power belts copper 223 grain and 50 grain per pellet triple 777. I cant not get the gun to group I will shoot once and hit 7 inches low and shoot again and not hit paper. Im new to all the muzzle loader stuff and it is bugging me I cant get a decent group at 50 yards. Im running a cleaning patch between every shot. Do I need to brush the barrel out after every shot or clean it till it is very clean im lost please help

I am going to assume you know how to shoot and are loading the gun properly (making sure the pellets and bullet are seated properly)and keeping the butt tight to your shoulder, squeezing the trigger and NOT lifting your head. So am not implying anything other than my assumption is that it is the gun not the shooter

1. Make sure your scope mount and scope are all screwed tight...so scope and barrel are not moving.
2. Make sure the screws that keep the stock and barrel are tight (this is definitely something that can cause what you are describing).
3. Are you shooting with a clean barrel....after each and every shot.
4. What is your load...2 50gr pellets or 3? I would start with 2 and then if all is shooting well you can try 3 pellets if you like. My son had a CVA wolf years ago (first muzzleloader gun) and it liked 100gr Triple 7 (2 pellets)and 250gr sabots.

Now....I personally do not like the PowerBelt bullets ...mainly because there are better bullets when it comes to killing came. People claim they are accurate but it may be that your bore doesn't like them. You might try using a sabot type bullet. I like (actually love) the Barnes 250 grain bullets (Barnes Spit-Fire T-EZ™ Sabots). If you want to try a good bullet that is less expensive the Hornady 250gr bullets are accurate and perform well on game.

I hope something in the above helps. Good luck.

Im going to recheck the scope and all now. Im shooting 2 50grain pellets and would like to stay with 2. Im wiping the barrel down after every shot with a wet patch but im not running a dry patch down after wards. the only place close that sells anything with muzzle loading is gander mountain so im going to see what else they have

Hopefully tightening things down will solve your problem. I had fits a few years ago with my TCProhunter and the cause was that the screw that connects the butt stock to the frame was loose. So check the screws.

There is nothing wrong with 2 50gr pellets but I would encourage you to try either the Hornady 250gr SST sabots or the Barnes 250gr sabots. They both will probably shoot almost identical out of your gun and the Hornadys are cheaper and typically easier to find.0

Do not run a dry patch after a wet patch, you may not be able to pull it back out and may have to take the gun apart and push it out the breach end. The point of the spit patch is not only to clean but also to lubricate for the next bullet, then evaporate. I don't usually have alot good to say about gander mountain but their muzzleloader supply selection is top notch, better than all the other big box stores, cabelas etc.

gander mountain is high as hell I went to cabelas and got the hornady 250gr sabots sst and they grouped great but my dang scope is bad I can bore sight it shoot twice and it is way out of whack. I out another scope on last night and going to try to get to the range one evening this week. Thanks for all the help

Had similar experience with the Powerbelts when I tried them in my TC Firebolt and TC Encore. Since I load 300gr Hornady XTP bullets in the 44Mag quite often I use those in the Muzzle loaders with the correct sabot for them. Accuracy is not fantastic at around 2 inches @ 100 yards but that is good enough for the hunting I do with them. That bullet does hammer deer.

I had a CVA WOlf about 6 years ago, and it would not group well at all with 150 grains of powder or the pellets. I ended up trying 100 grains and it was money.

Could be manufator error... Had just got a Kentucky .45 before deer season... Pard & i hit gravel pit like always... Loaded it with factory spect's measure, .440 round ball & patch shooting uat a can at base of gravel pile, open sights... Fired with pard watching... No idea were it hit... Reloaded, no cleaning, pard shot, with me as spotter... confused2 No idea were it hit... Getting a little peved.. confused2 . Reloaded, with out cleaning, each time harder ta reload, using Gorex powder... Aimed, getting ready to squeeze trigger, when pard, tapped me shoulder... Look down the barrel... confused2 am looking down barrel... He said, look down barrel, not the sights... The barrel had a curve in it... rofl We laughed... Took it back ta store & exchanged, . WISH still had it... This is side lock, Gorex powder ball & patch, open sights... We shot many times 3-4 times, with out cleaning, each time harder ta seat ball, yet could still hit can at 30 yards with good rest... 50yrds could drop a deer... very well be scope mounts or such... In this case bow in barrel... Sorry no pic's again wish still had that rifle... rofl Good for shooting around trees... Edit: inlines & the improved powders are way more accurate... flag

I think you will have better luck with a sabot and a heavier bullet, like a 295gr. I have two 50 cal. rifles and one shoot the powerbelt 295gr good but the other won't pattern with it using 100gr powder. I switched to the sabot, same weight and powder charge and it does good. b

Same problem here. Bore sighted mine and took it to the range yesterday, shot it 5-6 times and never touched paper at 25, 50, or 100yds... Guess I'll be swinging by HobbyLobby and picking up the widest roll of craft paper I can find, or some big sheets of foam. No clue where it is going. My traditions vortek NW with open sights was on straight away and doesn't kick half as hard as the Wolf, and the Traditions was lobbing 350 grain Federals.

Been in your shoes and threw a lot of money at the problem until I talked to Ray.
Look up muzzleloadingbullets.com and read ,read, read.
Contact Ray if you don't see your answer on the website.
Long story short, quit the pellets and go with loose powder. Brought my 100 yard groups to clover leafs and 200 yards will be 3".
I played with ignition systems and switched to the insert that uses small pistol primers as the 209 has too much power and theory is it unseats the bullet off the powder before it lights.
Might not work for you but I was about to give my rifle away until I made the changes and now it is one of my favorites to take to the range.
