Shooting Results - .50 GP Flintlock (A Whole Bunch of Targets)

Shooting Results - .50 GP Flintlock (A Whole Bunch of Targets) - 06/24/13 04:33 AM

I finally got around to scanning the targets from my first range session with the .50 Great Plains flintlock. All 15 are below.

They were shot at 50 yards from the bench with a Caldwell Rock Jr. rest under the forend and rabbit ear bags under the buttstock.

I'm quite happy with the results. That's about as good as my eyes can do with the Lyman primitive style rear sight. (Anyone have a 57 peep they want to sell?)

What impressed me is the consistency with loads ranging from 50 grains to 120 grains.

The first target is 50 grains GOEX FFg with an increase of 5 grains for each subsequent target.

Noting wrong with that shootin'. It appears your rifle may be one of those that likes many different combinations.

Thanks for posting your results. Enjoyed it.

Did you get a Buckhorn rear sight with it too? For me, it's a lot easier to aim but some purists look down their noses at them.

This is the only sight that came with the gun PH. It's blued - the camera flash makes it look shinier than it really is.

I will likely file it flat across the top to make a Patridge sight of it. I find a Patridge the best of iron sights for my eyes.

This is the sight I put on the one I built. There's just something about the sight picture that makes it easier for me to use. Being adjustable is a nice thing too.

I have one of those in the parts box. Took it off of my .54 Great Plains when I mounted a Lyman 57 peep on that gun.

So I could use it on the .50. Notice that it's flatter on the sides of the notch than then one on in my picture. That will give you a more precise sight picture. But I would be tempted to square the notch off a bit and make it wider to give more daylight between the sides of the front sight and notch.

As you probably already know, Track of the Wolf has about a hundred sight variations. I've called them about other stuff and they're both friendly and knowledgeable. If you describe what you want, they could surely give you a few choices. Except for the peeps, most of them are relatively cheap. I'm almost 59 years old but my eyes feel MUCH older. I pretty much keep most of my iron sight/peep sight shooting to 50 yards.
