Stuck breech plug on loaded Muzzleloader that won't fire!

I have an old kit muzzle loader my dad built for me years ago and recently shot it a couple times and it shot fine. Took it out the next weekend and it wouldn't fire. The only thing I can think of is I didn't get all the solvent out properly. So now I'am scared of the dam thing and have tried multiple times over the past couple weeks to remove the breech plug unsuccessfully. What can I do? Dont like working on a loaded gun and scared to transport it to a gunsmith.

When you say breach plug are you reffering to the nipple? Or is it a newer model inline with a 209 primer?

You can buy a CO2 extracter an hook it up to the nipple. This is really the easiest way. You can also take the nipple off and put a little powder down in the drum, then fire it out. Do you have a ball puller?

I'am not real familiar with muzzle loaders. It screws into the back of the barrell? I'll take a pic when I get home and put it on here.

You can get a CO2 extracter hook to the nipple and blow it out.Flintlock is right that is the safe way to do it. Sounds like you have wet powder. If you can get the nipple off you can put some dry powder in from the back side and put the nipple back on and cap it and fire it. A ball puller will work but you need help. The CO2 extracter is your best bet.

Just as a reminder for you.. if you swab after each shot as some of do.. snap a cap.. this will dry any moisture left by swabbing even if it's a modern 209 inline you should snap a cap to dry the moisture it doesn't take much to get to the point your at now. Follow is and you will always be fine.. pulling it out of the closet to go to range or hunting.. your barrel is oiled from the last time it was use.. wet patch, dry patch (or 2) snap a cap (2 if it doesn't sound clear) load and fire and repeat.

I know that some will say it is a bad thing, but you can pour some water into the breechplug and down the barrel. Let set for short time (say 15 minutes) then try to remove plug. Does not do anything to help the breech plug come out, but it does wet the powder sothat there is less chance of ignition.
Personally, I have found the CO2 things to be absolutely worthless- don't waste your money. Used up TWO cylinders and still did not expell the charge. Ended up wetting the charge, removing the plug, then pushing the bullet out with the ramrod.

Where are you located? Near Lockhart? I am in SW Austin and have tools to pull the ball on traditional MLs.

Go get the co2 discharger.... that will at least unload it for you ... i had a stuck patch and ball that i worked on so much with a puller it wouldn't grab hold anymore....broke down and got co2 and with one blast it was unloaded !! great investment
