Targets

So, I have a $35ish bag target from Academy that I've been using for the last couple of years. It's really shot up, but still takes shots (280+fps, 400grain arrows out of HTR and Z7Extreme). Today, a few minutes ago actually, I was shooting (Axis 340 w/ 100gr) and the arrow poked through and got stuck in our plywood backstop. This isn't the first time it's happened, but usually a couple of hard yanks pulls it out. This time--admittedly this has happened previously as well--I had to unscrew the arrow, leaving the tip in the plywood.

My question is, how long do bag targets last? When I was an active archer, I'd be putting at least 100 arrows a week in it.
Any recommendations that won't break the bank as a replacement?

A couple of years is good. Especially if it's exposed to the elements. I'm a two plus years into a Yellow Jacket bag and it's nearly the to change. Be sure you shoot all the spots, not just the center and turn your bag every hundred shots or so. Rotating the bag will extend the life of it.

Yep and yep, I do rotate it and shoot the other spots, though the middle is shot the most. Yep to being outdoors as well.

Yup, bags get shot out as all targets eventually will. Turning and shooting all spots helps with longevity. When a bag target gets to where it is not stopping your arrows lie it flat on the ground and walk around on it. That will help redistribute the rags it is filled with and get it back to stopping your arrows.

Also Axis arrows are smaller diameter than most arrows and will penetrate deeper than larger diameter arrows due to less drag on the arrow shaft.

Watch for sales on block type targets not necessarily the brand though, Rinehart targets are I think the best targets available but they are more expensive than some, cost is not as much as one might think when averaged over the years since the one I have now has outlasted the previous 2 block targets I have owned by at least twice.

Get some of the small one inch orange rifle target stickers and put them on your target bag in different places. The smaller dots will give you better groups. I bought a rinehart knock off from academy that has held up very well also.

The Rinehart targets work great. But my old hands need a puller to get my arrows out. I'm getting both for Christmas though.

I carry a Rhinehart when traveling but for field points at home I have a 36x36 Bulldogtarget. Wasnt cheap but free shipping from Canada was worth it. Still rotate and switch sides but been good one, and they do have smaller sizes for taking to lease or range.

At the point of $ that I am right now, cheap is the only thing I can afford, lol.

I am tempted to order Rinehart Block online for about $40 cheaper than MSRP, but my dad warned me of hellish arrow removal.

Any recommendations for something I can shoot both broadheads and field points on and is under $100 (closer to $50, lol)?

I don't like Dick's, but, I found that they have the Delta Shotblocker tagets, and they have been on sale the last two times that I needed a new target. Think I paid $39 last time. Check Dick's.

Arrow removal on Rhineharts is NOOO fun. They last forever though. I think getting 2 years out a $35 bag target is great. I just bought another Hurricane bag target today. $35 is easier to swallow than $100 and mechanicals fly the same as field tips so no need for broadhead target

chital you can shoot my Rhinehart block while at the ranch and decide if that works for you. I have had several types of targets and enjoy the block the best. They last along time and the weather doesn't affect them like a bag. I also have several glen dale bucks that I allow the hunters to use for practice, a little more realistic.

Do not get a black hole!!!! Tried a new black hole and it fell apart within 60 shots due to a broad head going thru the side. I have had a block for 12 years and never replaced it!! Just gave my old one away to a friend and got a new block!
