First Crossbow Buck (Lengthy but pics) - 10/07/16 07:22 PM
Been hunting for over 50 years but haven't shot a deer for some time. There are so many deer on our ranch that I just don't get excited by them any more, and I don't need the meat since we raise our own beef. I'm a pastor, and one of my church members owns an archery shop; he convinced me to buy a crossbow and I settled on a Stryker Katana. Been practicing like crazy and am really impressed with its accuracy. Set up a pretty good ground blind and got into it for the first time this morning.
Just after sunup a couple of does stepped into the clearing and it was fun watching them from 20 yards away. Then I was surprised by a nice 8-point buck that walked in and posed broadside at exactly my 20-yard mark. I eased the safety off and took the shot. He jumped straight up and ran, so I knew he had been hit. I checked the area and found my bolt covered in blood. After 20-30 minutes I found him 100 yards away in an open pasture. Talk about lucky! Nice buck, by Hill Country standards and he was just full of fat--packing it on for the rut I suppose. I'm hooked!
