Arrow conversions for crossbow - 10/26/15 07:27 PM

Some 30 odd years ago I was an avid bowhunter. Fast forward to now, I find myself with the crossbow itch so I just ordered a new 2016 PSE Fang. This prompted me to do a little more shopping around for bolts & broadheads. That's when I got total sticker shocked by the cost of new bowhunting equipment!!! I got out my old stuff & I found dozens of aluminum arrows in excellent condition. I made all my own arrows back then. Can these be cut-off, re-fletched & re-worked into bolts for my crossbow?

TIA...

If the OD is large enough they will work with the proper nock in them. I will have to check, but think my DCA carbon arrows are around .342 OD. I know the ID is .301. Fletch with a 2-3" vane either offset or helical, add a brass insert and you should be GTG.

I got friend who uses XX75 2219's at 20" with half moon knocks for his Barnett Raptor.

Whatever you use make sure the total grain weight is at or above minimum manufacturer reccomendation. 2219 are typically used for bolt construction as they are heavy enough and have the spine to take the forces the crossbow puts out.

Thanks everyone for their replies & good advice. I went ahead & bought the Fang & I'm in awe of the raw power from this entry level X-bow!

I got out my old Aluminum 2219's & am looking to make some bolts out of them. They will be heavier than the f-glass lightweights sent with the bow for sure, so no problem there.

Where can I get moon nocks that fit a 2219? I guess they are inserts & don't glue onto the nock taper(?) Are the shrink on vane sets worth-a-hoot & if so will they fit a 2219? I'm an old arrow maker but this is all new to me!!

TIA for any help or advice.

Cabelas has the inserts, nocs, and fletching. The nocs are press fit or can be glued. Usually use a stick hot glue from AAE for gluing the inserts. I would cut the fletch end off when shortening and use the inserts already in them. The shrink wrap fletch works but doesnot hold up as well as glued on. Tale care wheh putting the half moon inserts in the bolt so they will align currectly with the string with the odd vane down in the gr[ve
