Whisker Biscuits

Whisker Biscuits - 07/31/15 02:33 PM

So my bow has a whisker biscuit on it which I don't mind, except for the fact that whenever I draw back the bow...its LOUD. I can't see how an animal would not hear the sound of the arrow being pulled through the whisker biscuit during the draw back. With the drag of the whiskers being applied to the surface area of the arrow, I can understand why its so loud, but before I try to spend money to get rid of the sound, I was hoping somebody could tell me if most all arrow rests make some kind of sound during the drawback. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I never noticed a lot of noise on mine while shooting Beman shafts. Might try putting a light coat of stringwax, Remoil, etc on the whiskers.

You could probably lube a few shafts, run them through the hole, and try to get it done that way.

I do everything I can to limit the noise and most rest do not make noise when you draw the bow back. That is the main reason I went away from the whisker biscuit.

When I had mine, I used graphite powder and it greatly reduced the friction.

Like txshntr said I would use a dry lube like graphit instead of an oil or grease.

I have never noticed my wisker biscuit make noise. Are their differen size wisker biscuits? is the diameter of the hole too small for the arrow?

Re: Whisker Biscuits - 07/31/15 03:44 PM

Thanks for the help guys, I'll check into the various lubes to see what I can find.

As mentioned above by redchevy, I was shooting a target arrow which had a larger diameter than what I will typically be shooting so maybe it was too large for the opening in the biscuit. I will be shooting CX Maxima Hunter's later today which are substantially thinner so maybe the noise will lessen considerably.

Thanks again for the information guys, I appreciate it.

Txshntr, what rest to do recommend, I assume its a fall away rest of some kind?

QAD Is the only way to go. You wont look back at that biscuit once you upgrade.

After I burned up my WB, this is what I converted to.

Do yourself a favor and get rid of the WB and get a good fall away rest.

I believe they are. OP may have the wrong WB for the size of his arrows. I know mine never made any noise.

I still have a biscuit in my box for a back up. Very functional and reliable rest. Dry lube or silicone spray will cure any draw noise. But, a QAD is a better option.

You will like the fall away much better.

Same here. Never had a problem with the WB. Last year I installed a QAD HDX on my bow just to see if it was true what everyone was saying. I haven't noticed any difference in the noise level of either rest.

I like my whisker biscuit, its always been quiet, I nock an arrow lay the bow across my knees in my pop-up when its go time just pick it up and draw, no worrying about the arrow falling etc. It may not be the ultimate for comp shooting etc. but for a good reliable hunting bow I like it a lot.

Hunted with WB for over 12 years and never once had an issue. True that there are different sizes to match the arrows. I use gold tips most the time and have zero noise. I know some of the cheap cabelas/scheels and other brands coat their arrows with crap to make them more "tuff". They make noise. I try to keep things as simple as posible on my bow. Machanical things fail. The WB won't. I've seen drops fail due to being frozen or strings breaking. Had a guy hunting elk with me for 2 weeks in Montana and Idaho. He broke 2 fall aways and one while drawing on a bull. I don't take the chance.

I have been hunting with a drop away for 12+ years and I have never had one fail. I have hunted in freezing rain and temps below 10 degrees and never had one fail. If you want to be mediocre and hit a "pie plate" then a WB is great. I do have news for you guys though. A WB can fail. It may only be the whiskers but they can fail. There are ways to make a fall away "hold your arrow" if you shoot something other then a ripcord or QAD. I shoot a limbdriver with the arrow keeper. Lay my bow in my lap without the arrow falling off the rest. I also shoot a smaller launcher so if my rest does ever fail I can still shoot it like the old style prong test they used for years before a WB was invented. Every product in archery can fail, nothing is fail proof. Arrow flight and accuracy is more important to me then "the arrow falling off" is. Your groups will increase and your accuracy will increase with a drop away. Google slow motion WB arrow flight and it will speak for itself.

I call bs on the fall away fail. Like anything else, it can happen. I've also seen an arrow get jammed in between the bristles of my biscuit and have to straighten out the situation and missed a shot op a time or two. But I've had QADs on my last four bows and not a single failure. And my LX fell over 20' out of a tree in Missouri. My QAD holds my arrow secure lain across my lap, stalking or tree stand hunting.

I shot a biscuit for many years before. I gained a lot in accuracy when I switched. But as I said, if I ever do have a failure of my dar I have a biscuit in my box I can quickly set up, sight in and get me through a hunt. However I have a bow in my closet set up and ready to go as well so is that saying my Mathews/Elite/Hoyt bows have all been of such poor dependability I had to have a back up?

No but chance favors the prepared mind.

While we're on the subject I have a question. I've alway used 4 inch duravanes but I would like to try the short blazer style vanes. I've heard the blazer style are not very compatible with the whisker biscuit. Any truth to that?

Did you not read the entire post??? We are getting rid of all whisker biscuits and bows made from animal bones. loco_too
Actually the blazer vanes will probably shoot better through your ancient style rest. They make less contact.

Re: Whisker Biscuits - 08/04/15 02:20 PM

I was shooting some pretty thick Carbon Express CXL Pro's and they were making a lot of noise on drawback. I switched to the Carbon Express Maxima Hunter with a smaller diameter and the noise has lessened considerably but it is still very noticeable. Guess I'll be trying some of the lubricants mentioned earlier. If that doesn't work, then it looks like I'll be upgrading arrow rests.

Blazers work well with the biscuit.

I've never had to refletch Blazers due to the biscuit. They hold up well and I believe they are one of the best innovations in arrows in the last twenty years.

I had a whisker biscuit for the longest time good and safe, but I got a ripcord drop away rest it is more accurate. I like it even more.
