Need Advice on Bow Sight and Rest

Need Advice on Bow Sight and Rest - 03/24/15 03:00 AM

I am fairly new to bow hunting, but I wanted to go balls to the wall and get a nice bow. I shot several bows and did some research. I eventually ordered an Obsession Evolution last month. It should arrive within the next few weeks. I am looking for input on which sight and rest to get. Are the "top of the line" sights really worth it? I would prefer to spend around $100. I have read that Spot Hogg and Sword sights are a good bang for your buck. As far as rests, do whisker biscuits really destroy arrow fletchings that badly? I have read good things about the Trophy Taker Smack Down, but it is pricey. Anywho, I am open to all opinions and suggestion! Thanks.

I will first say that you will get what you pay for....and pay less now and pay more later is a second phrase to go along with the first.

I researched rests this past winter for my son's bow and ended up buying the ripcord code red, seemed to have good reviews and most everybody liked it that had one. I got tired of him getting clutching torn off his arrows (two arrows had exact same clutching ripped off by his rest) plus his rest he was getting some minor erratic flight from his rest so it was time for an upgrade.

Can't speak to sights...

Good tough sights, Spot Hogg or Copper John. Yes Whisker biscuits are tough on fletching, they also slow the arrow down compared to a drop away rest. Ripcord code red is a good one and several from QAD work well including the Hunter which sells for about $60.

Thanks,

Agree with this. I am a big fan of the Spot Hogg and it is well worth the price.

Took me longer than most to switch to the drop away rest, but I have been impressed since I switched. Never been a big fan of the whisker biscuit, but mainly because of noise and the fletchings.

Good luck up

You can't go wrong with a properly set up drop away rest. I use the Code Red and really like it. I haven't had to touch it for tuning in two years. I'm a fan of the HHA single pin sights. Once sighted in small adjustments are easy to do. There are lots of good sights on the market depending on your preference for single or multiple pin sights. Good luck and enjoy your new hobby, it will become a passion.

I've got a QAD ultra rest on my current bow and like it alot. I will be putting one on my next bow also.

I switched from the biscuit to the QAD Ultra. The bisquit is not a bad rest. The speed drop through it is nominal. Normally less than 2fps. If you shoot Blazer vanes it will not tear them up. As for sights the Spott Hogg line up is a good sight. I prefer the Acxel Armortech HD. I've had two on two different bows and never an issue. Easy to sight in and rock solid. Good light transmission as well.

I have sword sights on both my rigs. 1 is an apex hunter about $50, the other is an apex 3rd plane. Both awesome sights, very very tough. Have qad hdx now, shot the TT smack down. Like them the same.

A drop away is awesome if you get it set up right. The bisc is going to add noise when you release and the fletching hits the wiskers. Gives a little pop sound. Deer don't like pop.

Thanks everyone. I'm leaning towards as Spot Hogg Real Deal. What do you guys think about pin size and large guard vs small guard?

I like the small circle so I can align the peep circle and front sight circle then put pin where it belongs. Pin size depends on eye sight, good vision small pins
