Anybody else like the oldies

Anybody else like the oldies - 12/31/14 02:50 PM

In a archery world where two year old bows are considered obsolete I take a lot of trash talk for shooting the oldies. I never understood why archers need the greatest new bow each year, rifle hunters don't do this and those old bows still kill deer as dead as they ever have. I get this answer a lot when I ask why not shoot these bows, "well there's better out there that are faster" yeah well if I wanted faster and better Id shoot a rifle or crossbow which I still do. I just like to take bows that are given to me and kill critters with them to show the person that gave it to me there's nothing wrong with the bow.

I'm up to about 10 now and have killed something with most of them.

1999 Hoyt Raider- found in junk pile where a rent house was cleaned out
1979ish Browning Cobra- given to me in a shop clean out
1980 Browning Deluxe Nomad- given to me by my FIL he salvaged from a friend for me

Ben Pearson Courgar 1960s- bought for $10 out of the back of a truck at a cafe
Browning Nomad Stalker 1970- from a friend "if you'll shoot it you can have it"
Ben Pearson Special No 730 1970ish- given to me by my late uncle killed 1000s of fish by him and me.

Don't throw out your old bows and arrows, some people still use them. I can't even count the amount of arrows I have that people said I don't use them anymore here.

That Cobra brings back a lot of memories. My first bow. Killed my first deer (doe) with a Browning X-Cellerator (similar to your Nomad). Lots of memories there. Thanks for posting.

I hunt everyday with a Matthews FX, killed three deer and two turkeys this year with it.

Proves that new and improved don't make critters more dead. Cool collection.

Nice collection; that Browning brings back a lot of memories. My first compound was a Browning all wood 4 wheel bow. I bought in '82. I was shooting 2117's that were way too long for my draw with satellite BH's.

I went traditional all season. I love it. Didn't get a shot on a deer but was close several time hunting from the ground. Im pretty sure I wont go back to compound.
Im always looking for people selling recurves.

I've killed a few with recurve but I like to switch it up. Crossbow, recurve, compound, muzzle loader, rifle, pistol, it keeps things interesting.

Thanks for the post - it has got me thinking about getting my old bows out. I quit bowhunting many years back but I still watch the TV shows & read the magazine articles. The new bows can shoot 350fps??? WOW! I remember my favorite bow, a Golden Eagle 60lb compound (wheels, not cams; 35% let-off), shot my aluminum arrows out at 215fps. I shot fingers, no release. I guess it is still safe to shoot it(?) I could probably handle the weight with a release no problem (I'm an old guy now - LOL). A new ultra-stiff fiber arrow, centershot might fly pretty fast too. What is shocking to me is the cost of the new archery equipment. One carbon arrow with lighted nock & fancy broadhead could cost up to $50!!! I'd be afraid to let one go in the woods...LOL

CMC, I was thinking about your post and I remembered that I have a shop grade press for your bows in my attic. It won't work on parallel limbs but it was made for your bows. You are welcome to have it, I'll never use it again. Let me know if you're interested.

Re: Anybody else like the oldies - 03/21/15 06:47 PM

Im a fan of the MQ1 Ive owned a couple of them. They are so forgiving. My first compound was a golden eagle super hawk. I shot tons of fish with it and a lot of fury animals. Its still in the possession of an old friend. I have shot a lot of fish with old wooden recurves, and still shoot fish with a high country micro quad and an old camo compound that I don't even know what it is for all the paint.

Gave my old Darton 40B to a buddy for his kid...Man, I really do wish I had my first performance bow, a Proline Point Blank. Had it set 80# shooting 2317 Easton's with 125 thunderhead. It was dead quiet and would roll a deer shooting them in the shoulders....this was just before the PSE overdraw to get to 300 fps craze.

I just seen your post sorry. How old is it?

Re: Anybody else like the oldies - 04/10/15 02:42 PM

My MQ1 at 70 pounds with a 29 inch draw, 29 inch acc 360 and a 100 grain thunderhead would shoot 245 fps. I remember them advertising a lot faster in the magazines. Realization is always slower. It was probably a 1999 model. I think some of the companys put the lightest arrow and point they can find in the bow to give a higher fps raiting. Pretty much dry firing them with an ultra light arrow and no string silencers to get the quickest speed possible for the sale. up
