Nothing good happens on Ebay after 2am - 01/10/13 09:38 PM

Yup joined the dark side this morning. Ever bid on something thinking no way it will sell this low, yup happened to me. Have been looking at mid-range Hoyt bows for a little while. Bow hunted for a while many years ago, but just booked my Moose hunt for Sept so time to get a new one and get back to practicing.

Yes price was an issue for me because I have a lease to pay for, Canada Moose trip, 15th Anniversary, and Disney World trip for my family of 6.

I have shot a Rampage XT before and really liked them, also liked the Alphamax. I also love the carbon matrix but way to much $$$$. I found a Rampage (original) blackout model still new in the wrapper. banana2 Yes I know it is M4 not Fuel cams and about 20 IBO slower but for a new guy I don't think I would ever notice the difference.

Bow is bare so I get to go shopping for accessories but I look forward to that.

A little nervous about doing the D loop by myself and may have it done at a bow shop.
Questions:
1. Moose don't jump the string so not an issue but is this bow at 306IBO fast enough for Texas whitetail?

2. I have seen one before but forgot the name. I want a containment rest that is not a whisker biscuit. I am just not wanting to shake and drop an arrow since I am still considered a newb. I just can't think of the name of it. saw a video where it is containment but as soon as you relase it drops away.

3. Broadhead recommendations for Moose!!!!! LOL

+1 on the QAD drop away. Love mine.

As for arrows and speed for Moose, I am not sure but Slick Trick makes several BH's for bigger game.

Go back and read up on Howard Hill, Fred Bear etc. They shot recurves and long bows that never broke 200 FPS but they also shot heavy arrows (Hill shot some seriously high poundage long bows). My point is that speed is not going to be the issue, shot placement is. For Moose don't go for the fastest set up you can shoot i.e. light arrows and broadhead you are going to want some mass in your arrows so they hold their KE and give you better penetration down range. If you are not already a good archer spend a little money and get some instruction so you learn it the right way the first time. Then practice and have fun.

Great advice guys. In regards to speed I meant for Texas whitetail. I think with the Moose speed is fine, that is going to come down to shot placement and correct arrow/broadbead selection. Kind of like rifle u don't have to have a 300 Win Mag if u use the right bullet and good shot placement.

Is the QAD HD containment?

QAD is the best rest in the whole universe.

QAD is drop away. For moose i'd think that the broadhead would have to be cut on impact. Congrats and good luck

Will look at the QAD, the one I was thinking of is the trophy ridge revolution.

Plenty fast. You would have to shoot over 1100fps for them not to hear the noise before the arrow gets there. A 280fps relatively quiet bow is better than a 320fps loud bow.

7ARanch is right, Speed is not an issue. Just design your arrow to kill what you want. I shot a Moose with a bow that had an IBO of 308 FPS. Plus if you have a setup for Moose/Elk; Whitetail, pigs, and anything else you hunt in north America will not be an issue. For Moose/Elk I recommend a very solid fixed single bevel broadhead with a total arrow weight over 650 gr and the highest FOC you can get.
According to the Dr Ashby reports, This should enable you to be able to bust through big bones if for some reason the shot is not perfect.
Take a look at http://www.alaskabowhunting.com
They have the best equipment around.
They do cost some money but they are very well worth it.
I spent four years and an unknown amount of money researching and testing different setups and finally switched to Alaska Bowhunting Supply's arrows and broadheads. I now get a 100% pass through every time and wont use anything else but their broadheads and arrows. They are that awesome.

Hostage and hostage pro are containment style rests. hostage pro is what came on the Diamond Deadeye I bought new in October.

Welcome to the club.

1) yes it's fast enough for whitetails
2) I have the QAD HDX and limb driver pro... Both FC. I like the vapor trail better then the QAD.
3) I use one head for big stuff like elk and that's "solid broad heads" not cheap but once you see them in person and shoot them you will know why. Steve speck owns the broadness company... If you know any thing about him he is all big western type archery hunting. It's a superb head and you won't find a tougher head. It's designed to penetrate and be highly accurate.

Yeah that might leave a mark!!!!!!!!!

I have been looking at the Magnus buzzcut. My only issue is I intend to practice with what I am going to shoot and those solid broadhead's those look like they could get expensive.

No I practice with mine all the time... Leather strop and they are razor sharp again.

They are the toughest head I have ever shot. Even of you miss target and nick a rock... Easy to sharpen back up plus they have a life time warranty

i use the magnus snuffers...ya get 6 to a box, 3 for practice(using a bh stop block they never bend), and 3 for hunting. even the practice ones can be sharpened and used for hunting in about 5 minutes.
i shot a 6X6X6 cedar post( a piece left over) with mine, it totally submerged, and when i burned the wood away it barely had a slight bend to it. i did shoot it again, and it was still on time, but i wont risk it...junk drawer. just wanted to see what it would do.
