gun racks in pickups - 01/10/23 12:32 AM

What's the law about guns in gun racks nowadays. I'm almost 70 and not really into the new stuff like open carry etc. and I aint worth a damn at navigating the web for info.

I just wondered if you drive through a school zone with all the scare lately. Years ago a friend of mine was following his daughters school bus to a basketball game in Victoria and got pulled over and he had a rifle in his truck and he got arrested. I dont know how those laws work.

There is a 100% chance he was doing something other than you described

Wouldn't do it myself. Not because it's out of style but because it invites theft.

he was doing nothing wrong just escorting his daughters school bus, he's a well known oil man. he said he had a couple hunting rifles in the cab of his pickup in a rack on the ceiling of his cab.

So he went to jail for what?

I’m telling you, he was doing something other than you listed.

With the guy's name, you can access arrest records online and find out the real reason. What he told you and what he was actually were arrested for are not the same. A non-felon in Texas doesn't get arrested for "a couple hunting rifles".

We used to go to school with gun racks in our back window and leave the windows down to beat the heat..... Gone are those days

I remember putting our shotguns in the PU gun rack to dove hunt after school. No big deal in the late 1950’s.

70's same. During hunting season about every pickup in yhe parking lot rack with guns. Shotgun, rifle or both. Many of the trucks not locked. Ammo on the seat or dash.

Yep, graduated in '72, very common to have rifles or shotguns in a rifle rack at high school (Austin, TX so not exactly a small farm town).

Never a problem.

I graduated in 72, always had a couple of rifles in the gun rack parked at school, ammo on the dash just like half a dozen others. Never was a problem. The only time I ever had a issue was on the square in McKinney. I worked there after school and on Saturdays. I had a 750 Honda that I had rigged a rifle scabbard on that I carried a scoped 22 rifle in. I came out of work one day and the meter maid writing tickets on the square was standing there looking at it. I ask her if there was a problem. She said yes, that has got to be illegal. I ask what was the difference from a gun rack in a truck? She said she didn't know but was sure it was illegal. She let me go and said to check with her the next time I saw her. Saw her a couple of weeks later she smiled and said I was good to go.

Good way to arm your local neighborhood felon.

Wasn’t a problem in the late 80’s either.

I grew up in Comal County in the 70s and early 80s. . Gun racks in trucks were very common. And no one messed with them. The guns or their owners. Just common sense. Nowadays a 6th grader would probably take one on a bet.

I miss the old days. And I’m not that old.

Yep.... We used to take our shotguns to school on our gun racks... Parents had not a care or concern ... Go hunt dove right by where Great Wolfe Lodge now stands. Grapevine police would sometimes stop by and ask us how many we got.

UT students with deer rifles in their pickups returned fire at the tower shooter and saved lives. 'Hardly ever mentioned when the story is covered.
