In the market for a new 270

In the market for a new 270 - 06/05/18 09:21 PM

I'm just starting my search for a new 270. I'm looking for some suggestions for quality rifles in the $1000-$1500 range. I've been looking at the Tika T3 lite models and a couple of Sako's. Do any of you have experience in either of these? Or can you offer another model I should look at? I'm looking for a nice rifle with great accuracy.

For that price range, I could build you a custom Tikka T3 with a custom Bartlein or Kreiger barrel and chamber it in most any caliber you want. 1/2 moa or less, no problem.

Thanks Chad, Never thought about having a rifle built. I'll definitely keep you in mind. What is the turn around time on something like that?

Depends on the barrel selected and gun smith lead times. Generally, about 2-3 weeks to 1-2 months. If parts are in stock, and gun smith has the reamer in the caliber you want, that speeds things up.

Consider Chad’s offer. I have a Sako in 270, and it has been a great rifle. I had it tuned by Bill Wiseman in Bryan when it was new. And i have a Tikka in 260 that Chad had done for me, with a Brux barrel. The Sako shoots great, but the Tikka shoots better. The Sako is prettier, but i hardly ever hunt with it any more. I grab the Tikka. I’ll never sell either.

With that budget I would buy a Sako or a custom tikka from chad.

Or buy the tikka T3 save some bucks and upgrade your optic to the next level.

Whatever you do it sounds like a win win situation.

Browning has some very nice offerings in that price range. I liked what they had at the NRA show.

Here's what I'd do (if I didn't prefer Model 70s)...

Barrett Fieldcraft

Weatherby produced a special run of their Vanguard Series 2 rifle that you can still find in some Walmart stores for $657. They call it a "Deluxe Sporter" that you won't find listed in the Weatherby catalog because it was created specifically for Walmart and select retailers. It carriers the same high gloss wood stock and deep bluing as the Deluxe model that Weatherby offers (a $1200 gun that you will see in their catalog), but without the thin plastic inserts on the stock fore end and heel cap. However, it does have the same rosewood end piece at the end of the forearm. It also carries the same accuracy guarantee that comes with any Series 2.

Add a very nice scope and you'll have a rifle that few out-of-box rifles can touch for performance and price. In terms of accuracy, the one I have (which happens to be a .270) has outperformed every Remington, Winchester, Browning, and Marlin rifle in my safe.

In a .270 win I would get a sako, model 70 or a Montana rifle co. Possibly a kimber.

I would want a wood stock

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys. Gives me a lot to think about. At this point I'm leaning towards the Sako.

Love mine, it is ine of the best bolt action rifles I have owned or shot. Actually like it better than the Sako I had for years or the Tikka's.

I suggest a Ruger #1 in .270 Win with classic wood stock. The rifle is a joy to hunt with & a joy to behold.
