Precision Rifle Instruction with FiremanJG

I had a great day yesterday at Jason's range going through his Precision Rifle Instruction. I had been planning to do that for at least 2 years, but just kept getting busy and putting it off. I'm glad I finally got it done.

I was amazed at what he was able to walk me through in one day. I brought two rifles that hadn't been shot before and was able to wring them out and get consistent hits with both rifles on his steel plates out to 800 yards. The clean cold (and new) bore was a definite challenge. The first rifle is one of the Remington M24 rebuilds with a Leupold Ultra 10X-M3A scope. The POI was jumping all around at 100 yards for the first 10-15 rounds. It finally settled in enough that we could get a zero and start taking it out through his course in 100 yards increments. With the M24, I was hitting out to 800 yards well before lunch. At each distance, Jason would point out the mirage and call the wind holds as we went out through the targets. After we got out to 800 yards, we came back to 100 then walked out using elevation holds only out to 600 yards. That is where the scope ran out of mil dots, so we stopped there.

We started on the second rifle pretty late, after some fun trying to zero the scope. The rifle is an M40A3 that was built in the USMC Precision Weapon Shop at Quantico. The scope of one of the 10X USMC Unertl scopes. Ask Jason about zeroing that scope...ha! It takes 3 hex wrenches and a lot of guess work and trial and error to zero the knobs. Getting the lock ring lose to be able to adjust parallax was even more fun. Despite all that we were able to march straight through from 100 up to 700 yards, then gave it a little cool down time and went on out to 800 yards before we quit for the day.

If any of you have been putting this off like me, you owe it to yourself to go ahead and schedule a day with Jason.

This is the M40A3 and USMC Unertl scope. In the second picture, you can see that the elevation is set at 700. (I took the pictures while we were letting the barrel cool down.) It also has a fine elevation adjustment just below the elevation knob, that is set at minus 1 moa in this picture. That was fun to work out too.
