Bolt Noise on Ruger American

Bolt Noise on Ruger American - 05/14/18 12:15 AM

I bought my youngest a new Ruger 270. The noise when cycling the bolt seems very loud to me. Louder than any of our other bolt actions. I don't see any scratches on the bolt. Could the trigger assembly be set too high? I expect I will call Ruger Monday but wanted to get some feedback if there are known issues. Thx.

I will try to video but it is just a little quieter than drawing a knife across a steel.

I bet this is normal, maybe add some grease to area, bolt lugs, it will probably "work" itself out. maybe rubbing on the magazine follower? I love this rifle for what it is, hope it cures itself.

if not Rugers service is first rate and will take care of it.

I had to lap the bolt on my son's American Ranch Rifle to make it smooth and quiet. I put rubbing compound on the bolt and cycled the action until the compound turned black. Wiped off the compound, reapplied and repeated until it was like glass. It turned out to be one of the smoothest actions in the house.

I was going to sugfest this. Did you get valve lapping compound from the auto parts store?

OP,
Remember to only go front to back. No compound on the face of the bolt, and dont rotate the bolt into the locked position. You could affect your head spacing if you do that.

I can’t hear any of my bolt actions with my hearing protection in/on

Thanks. And thanks for the reminder on not closing the bolt. I thought about lapping but wanted to see if there were any known issues.

pig_popper duh, I should have thought of that. Put my hearing protection on and the problem cleared right up...I wonder if that will work for other issues, son wanting to borrow the car, daughter's new boyfriend. Notice I stayed away from the obvious.. don't get to my age by doing stupid. laugh

its normal the reciever has tooling marks, you could polish all of it, if it bothers you but theres nothing wrong with it.
i had one for a while but sold it, heres a video of me shooting a hog you can here the bolt noise around the 34second mark

That's normal. The RPRs do it too.
