.22 Hornet vs .223 Rem

I really want a .22 Hornet but I keep thinking that I should get a .223 so I have more options for using the gun. Primary uses will be shooting pigs at feeders and riding around in the Ranger.

Let say all shots will be inside 200 yards. Which one would you go with? I have a .30 suppressor but I think it will be a little cumbersome on a .223 bolt action.

223 all day due to ammo and capability.

The only advantage a hornet has over a 223 is its quieter and has no recoil. If you don’t reload Hornet ammo is about $1.00 a shot.

I went through the same decision process and finally went with the 223.

I really like the but with hogs at perhaps 200 yards go 223. I wouls go a bit bigger than the 223 having killed several critters with both those and many others

Cheaper, more widely available ammo, more capable cartridge. I fail to see why you would go with a Hornet unless there is a specific gun you have in mind that is not offered in .223.

I had a nice Hornet. When the brass started cracking, I sold it and now have a few 223's. I don't think the Hornet would shoot 200 yards accurately.

I vote 223. You can get the twist that best matches what you plan to do. Brass is probably easier to come by than any other cartridge. There is a huge selection of available projectiles. It is among the easiest to load for. The list of powders that work well is long. If you don't load there is a multitude of factory ammo available and is reasonably priced. Rifles are available from a lot of companies in a lot of configurations making it pretty easy to find just what you want. On the other hand it's your money so get the one you prefer.

.221 Fireball

223 is more versatile if you handload. Also, the people I know that use a hornet limit their shot range quite a lot.

.223 gives you the option of 35-75 gr bullets with hundreds of choices in between. You can easily pick the best bullet for your needs.

.22 hornet is much more limited in bullet choices and most of then are light varmint bullets.

Now if you had said you only wanted a rifle to stick out the window of your house, shots no more than 100 yards on hogs and wanted to keep the noise down so you don't annoy quite as many neighbors, then I'd say get a .223 with a suppressor.
