Do any of you carry a 9mm? Either as Primary or Back up?

If so, what it your "go to" ammo if the SHTF?

Re: Law Enforcement Officers!! - 02/17/18 03:34 PM

Go to for my 357sig duty and 9mm off duty is Hornady Critical Duty. If in anything shorter than a 4 inch barrel, use Hornady Critical Defense.

Although they look the same, they are designed differently and work best in the designated barrel lengths

How about the latest craze of lightweight solid cooper bullets with the spiral (Phillips Screwdriver) looking points?

Many shooters have gone to a "summer" load and a "winter" load.

Why? We don’t change our ammo based on seasons, find one that works well in all conditions, like the one mentioned above

Not a LEO so I won't try to contribute. But summer winter load are you talking about a smaller firearm during the summer for ease of concealment and a larger firearm during the winter because of the thicker clothes? I've heard of people doing this or am I missing something?

Exactly it, I guess the Critical Duty might serve for both seasons

You know us gun people, always looking for an edge or something new

Don't overthink it Buzz and don't chase the latest trends with such an important decision. BP has a good suggestion and I recall BIL uses Gold Dot. Go with what LEO/FBI uses.

Not an LEO but Winter clothing, heavy coats etc. can fill a hollow point and cause it to behave like a FMJ and not expand.

He77 BIG FITZ, you know me, I overthink EVERYTHING

I still don't know what I'm shooting in two weeks, got no ammo ready. My BDC turret is not working correctly, maybe I can shoot Chad's Winny .22 for the whole thing

Barnes TAC-XPD is incredibly reliable. It’s the bees knees.

Re: Law Enforcement Officers!! - 02/19/18 09:37 PM

Why is this only addressed to LEOs. A lot of cops don’t shoot more than they need to. Lots of civilians put hundreds of rounds through their guns monthly. I’m guessing you’re looking for a reliable self defense rounds after the Barnes hiccup. I’m of the opinion that any defensive rounds from any major manufacturer will have close enough performance (ballistics wise) to any other similar round. Find one your gun likes, shoot enough rounds til you are comfortable with it, and move on.

I carry Federal HST on duty, Hornady Critical Duty off duty, and I've carried Gold Dots in the past. I would trust my life to any of them.

Re: Law Enforcement Officers!! - 02/19/18 10:38 PM

I'm not a LEO but I have spent some time testing lots of pistol bullets on various targets including water jugs and pig carcasses.

The top 3 bullets across the board for me is Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, and Winchester PDX1. The one exception to that is the Speer Gold Dot in 380. Both me and my brother have tested that one and we get inconsistent expansion. For the 380 the PDX1 is my choice.

I have seen it at GT but I think they only sell it to those with law enforcement ID if I remember correctly.
