What height rings would I need for a 50 mm Objective?

Depends on a lot of factors. Rifle, barrel contour can be a factor, and every brand of rings is a little different. I’ve used mediums and even lows before, but you just never know til you try. Unless somebody has the same rifle and scope and rings as you.

As long as the barrel isn’t some huge MUT or straight taper medium rings should work.

Measure the heights of the ring base and ring itself then add them together. Subtract half of outside dimension of the objective. You're looking for a positive value. If you get a negative value then go up to the next taller ring. You can usually find the dimensions for the bases, rings and objective diameter on the manufacturers website.

[rail height + ring height] - [bell diameter x 0.5]
If the value is positive, then your bell will clear the barrel. You want to keep the scope as low as possible so you can maintain a good cheek weld.

This. Post the rifle/scope/rings combo and you'll get more accurate answers.

I have ran 50s in mediums on a lot of guns.. of course, not everyone's medium is the same..

Unfortunately, we don't have standard measurements across the board. Badger mediums might not be the same height as Talley mediums, or Vortex mediums, or Burris mediums. It is a headache to find real measurements on scope heights from one manufacturer to the next. I asked Skylar to build us a chart, but he's been lolly-gagging for three months. peep

Having said that, I use Badger Ordnance mediums on everything. They will clear a 56mm objective and give me the proper sight height coupled with a Triad Tactical stock pack.

Of course your stock, and natural point of aim, will dictate the proper ring height for you.

Pretty much everyone's "mediums" are going to work. But you might have a better cheek weld, and natural point of aim with some manufacturers "lows". Then again, some manufacturers "lows" might not let the obkective clear the barrel.

I think your best bet is to call Skylar at SWFA, as he knows a ton, and he can walk into the warehouse and put his hands on them. Great man to deal with.

Ive got a Vanguard in 22-250 and 30-06 in the house. The 22-250 has a 40mm scope on it and it's fine with low rings (dunno manufacturer). The 30-06 sits slightly higher with high Zeiss rings, with a Conquest 4.5-14x50mm. It has a jaw anchor rather than a cheek weld but it works for us, matter of getting used to. But if I had known better, I would've consulted and bought medium rings instead. Skylar knows his stuff, has helped me with optics related stuff via email.
