Century Arms AK-47 Most Accurate Load for Hunting

Century Arms AK-47 Most Accurate Load for Hunting - 09/13/17 04:24 PM

I have a Century AK-47. My pattern at 100 yards is all over the place (about 12" with most centered around the middle part of the target) with Hornady 123 grain steel casing 7.62x39's.

Have any of you guys had any luck with different ammunition to get a halfway decent pattern? If so, what brand have you had the best results with?

With the 7.62x39, you have about 10 different things that contribute to bad accuracy. 1- it's an AK. 2- It's steel cased ammo. 3- 7.62x39 ammo is not loaded to be match grade ammo or even to be very accurate. 4- Did I mention it's an AK? The tolerances are very loose on an AK, which does not yield to good accuracy. It's a battle rifle, not a precision rifle.

You can load up some good brass cased ammo and keep the powder charge more consistent to help in accuracy. 99% of the ammo for this caliber is loaded to simply go "bang". I would consider 3"-4" groups at 100 really good and around 5"-8" about the norm.

Try different bullet weights. My Yugo SKS is a pie plate shooter with 12x grain bullets, but shoots 3-4" with 154gr factory loads, 1.5-3" with hand loads using Sierra .311 150gr pro hunters. It shoots surprisingly well with the gas off. That would be a nice feature on an AK.

I shot hogs with a Ruger Mini 30 for years. I got the best results with 123 grain Federal Fusion. 123 grain Winchester soft points did well also. When shooting at the range for accuracy, be sure to make cold bore shots only and let the rifle cool way down before firing again. Once the barrel gets warm, your rounds will go everywhere.

My mini loves the Herters/Wolf 154gr. DRT.

My PSA shoots Hornady Black good enough to hunt with. It's a 123 grain SST hunting bullet loaded to 2350 fps. Should be effective.

Even being an AK I will be shooting no more that 100 yards. If I can get 3" to 4" at 100 I would be happy.

I'm good with it as is if shooting a hog but would rather have a good clean shot on a doe that far off.

What diameter is your bore? You may want to slug it. Hard to be accurate if you're launching .308 bullets down a .311 bore.

like many have said before, the AK is not a hunting rifle...hunting humans with the spray and pray method for sure. Spend $300 and get you a low end bolt action like a Ruger American or Savage Axis and stay away from those cheap rough action Remingtons.

The AK47 is plenty accurate for hog hunting. I've shot plenty of hogs with my SAM7. I'd go with Hornady SSTs or Goldenbear soft points, those have been the two most accurate loads for me.

I have a arsenal brand ak Bulgarians made.
It shoot 1/2 groups with a 3x9@100
0n rail mount. Nobody will believe me!
For most Ak's 4-6 inch @100 are normal.
For hunting I just factory loads or pull the bullet
from a brass case and replace it with same diameter and weight.

Nope, nobody is going to believe a 1/2 MOA AK. Most if not all ammo in that caliber is incapable of that, AK action and barrel itself does not lend to that either. Might have happened once.....
