Hunting Waterfowl with my 20ga. - 06/18/17 07:29 AM

I am planning on hunting ducks this season with my 20 ga. Charles Daly semi-auto this season. It has the Remington Rem-choke tread pattern, just wondering if any of you guys hunt with a 20 and if you could give me some choke and shot recommendations. I will be hunting over decoys most of the time and I'm sure there may be some pass shooting. Thanks for your suggestions in advance and happy hunting to all.

Guess I will buy some chokes and different shot and start patterning to see what the best combo will be.

Pass shooting with a 20 is iffy. 20 ga doesn't have a lot of shot choices. Shoot them over decoys and you will be more successful

Choose your shells based on velocity and you won't have any problems killing ducks. The guys on my lease talked a little smack the first time I showed up to Eastern spring turkey season with my 20 gauge 1100. After I've killed a turkey on opening day the last 3 years, they don't talk smack anymore. Lead or steel flying at 1300+ fps is going to kill, period. The diameter of the shell doesn't matter too much.

20 is fine for ducks, the ammo these days is really good. my daughter killed a few this year with her Remington 870 youth.

you still have to do your part though up

Last few times I duck hunted it was with the 20, I had picked up a bunch of heavy shot turkey loads, it swats ducks down just as well as it does turkey

Shoot it just as you would a 12, still plenty of shot in the air. Improved cylinder. P_102

I hunt mainly with a Remington 1187 20ga. I shoot with a modified choke. I mainly shoot 4 and 2 shot. I seem to have a bit better luck with the #4 Remington Hypersonic Steel than anything else.

I would recommend getting a couple of chokes and several different types of ammo and go pattern your gun. What works for me and my gun might be totally different than what you feel comfortable with.

I shoot 3" in my 1187 but my Mossberg 500C wouldn't cycle it as well as I had hoped.

As far as availability of ammo, it is true that there is not as much of a variety, but you can get most of what you want. You may just have to go online. I went to Wisconsin lasgt summer and found a whole new world of ammo that we never see this far south, so do some research and you might be surprised in what you can find.

I shot faststeel no.4 over decoys with my 20 gauge and had no issues. It's flying faster than their 12 gauge load and hits harder just less shot

My wife shot the exact gun last season for pass shooting and used a modified choke with #3 winchester drylok.
