Sunday morning we were at the lease in Cisco at our shooting range.
Set up a bench & rest. I have a beautiful Remington 700 deluxe in 17remington that I had purchased back in the late 80'S. I use to varmint hunt and reload for this rifle quite often. I always reloaded to factory spec of - 25grain @4200fps.
Anyway rifle has been put away for the last 15 years along with some reloaded ammo in my safe. I ran across some factory ammo not to long ago and decided to start shooting the gun again & start chasing varmints.
So on Sunday for some stupid [censored] reason I decided to check accuracy using these old reloads(which had never been a problem or show any signs of overpressure, when loading these round each load was weighed on a scale ) anyway 3 rounds everything is good to go & then #4 pretty much blew up in my face. All I remember is whole right side of my face was burning & stinging & both ears had severe ringing where you could not hear anything else. right eye was stinging and had grit/ powder flakes in it. I was by myself- it could have been bad news- turned out to be not so bad after I washed my face and eyes out & hearing came back. mostly came out with the right side of face looking like it was sunburned.
@ the very minimum 2 things I did wrong were : no shooting glasses or hearing protection. And I assume I should just destroy those reloads.
anyway after awhile I pulled the bolt out of the gun it was very tight but unlocked by hand; Shell casing is jammed in the front of the bolt head : looking at case there was a 1/8 to 3/16 hole blown in the case wall close to the rim. tried to knock the case out and it broke off at the rim still being stuck in the bolt face. you can see the rim and the primer hole & primer sill all in one piece stuck in bolt face.
SO what should I try to do to get the rim/primer section out & what should I do to check for damage?
PS checked target later and that last round was a bull eye. so no squib stuck in the barrel but will verify when I clean the weapon.
