Help buying a new rifle

Help buying a new rifle - 03/06/17 12:33 AM

Man oh man...need advice.

I have a large caliber (308)...I have a banger ar15 with irons. I have a bolt 300blk.

I am looking for a smaller caliber for shooting paper / possibly mid-sized game / varmint size game.

I want a flat shooter.

Heres whats rolling through my head.
1. Build a 223 in AR platform with heavy barrel 18"-22" with a fixed riflestock.
2. Get a mid-upper range bolt gun in .223, .243, or .22-250

I reload my own stuff, so ammo isnt a factor. I have dies and everything for above mentioned guns.

This gun is intriguing to me....what do you guys think, its an exclusive: https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/products2.cfm/ID/165267

also, for some reason the Mossberg MVP Preadtor always grabs my attention at the gun store.

somebody sway me...lol

Can't go wrong with a Tikka. I'd personally go with a .223 but .22-250 would work too. Budget for some good optics to put on it though. Oh the possibilities are exciting!

The rifle was around $850, can be found for a better price if your patient. Heck of a rifle for the price.

.224" cal with a 1:8, or 1:9 twist.

.223, and .22-250 are two that are never a disappointment.

I'd definitely go with option 2 based on what u have. The only thing I can add is that I really miss my 22-250 after the r Inc it into a 308. I will have another heavy barreled, varmint type 22-250 again some day and specifically to shoot a 75-85 train bullet.

22-250 with a 1:8 twist barrel, the 75 - 80gr bullets are game changers in a 22.

Too bad Tikka's .22-250 only comes in a 14-twist. They love the 52 amax, though!

Yup, my fast 22 is the wildcat 22-243 with a 27 inch Hart 1:8 twist.

I just went through the same predicament. I ended up with a Remington 700 in .223.

A fast twist .243 would be 1:8 twist or similar.

I beg to differ. I just ordered one with an 8 twist.

Tikka in 6.5 creedmoor would be my choice.

I know you didn't list that caliber and technically it's not a small caliber. But for paper punching and mid-sized it's perfect. The recoil is comparable to a .243 IMO and there are several high BC bullets to chose from.

Just got a Tikka T3x varmint in 22-250 and it is awesome! I've been using a Ruger American in 22-250 for varmint and plinking and while it was good, this Tikka has the smoothest action I've seen on a box rifle. The trigger is great as well.

Re: Help buying a new rifle - 03/07/17 03:28 AM

I just got a T3x Varmint in 223. Chad is going to load me up some ammo with the 75 grain Hornady BTHP bullet. Got a load working that is just one big hole at 100 yards. Gun is high quality, smooth, accurate, and can shoot a lot of rounds before it heats up. And the ammo is cheap. What's not to like?

I'm sure the 22-250 is good too. I was looking for the cheapest ammo I could get.

Re: Help buying a new rifle - 03/07/17 04:41 AM

One more thing - it's worth considering the merits of the Hornady 75 BTHP if you can get it up above 2800 fps. The BC is .395, which is really high for a .224 bullet. The drop and wind drift numbers are worse than bigger bullets (like FGMM 308 for instance), but not in a completely different ballpark or anything. I think at 1000 yards, I ran the numbers and bullet drop was basically the same and the FGMM 308 only had about 20" less wind drift at 1000 yards. Now FGMM isn't the best long distance 308 round, but it does show you what kind of performance you can get out of a 223 if you want to.

Re: Help buying a new rifle - 03/07/17 04:53 AM

Of those listed, .22-250 Remington. I shoot a factory 20" #2 1:14" barrel and it stabilizes the lighter bullets great and even does good on the 64gr Power Points. If you get a faster twist then you can really load up some sub 4000fps grenades in the higher grained bullets.

As someone else said, 6.5 Creedmoor. I've killed a bunch of deer sized (and bigger and smaller) game with my aforementioned .22-250 but if you want to kill stuff at farther distances that's bigger than a coyote, I'd say step up to the 6.5. Farthest kill I've had was an axis doe at 200ish yd shooting 55gr VMAX. Super dead, but took 20min to find, and no blood trail.

Tikka is a great option. Remington is great as well. I don't know how the Savage Axis is but I've used a few 11/111 Trophy Hunter XPs that did decently, but not as good as my older Weatherby Vanguards. Wouldn't discount the Ruger American either, been reading a lot of great stuff about it on the Forum.

I've always been partial to the .243, planning on new bbl in 1-8 to shoot the 105 gr. VLD's. Always wanted a .22-250 for varmints (and may get one someday) but feel the .243 comes out on top when you throw longer range shooting into the mix. P_102
